General Overview of Experience Everyone from the interview team to the current/retired Captains was very professional and went out of their way to make everyone feel comfortable. Bottom line, just like everyone else, they want to hire you and the job is yours to lose.
The day was comprised of a company brief, technical interview, lunch, and HR interview. Team was made up of HR staff and current/retired Captains. Most of the retired Captains are now sim instructors and did the technical interviews.
Company overview was pretty straight forward with info regarding the company as a whole as well as info relating directly to the applicant (benefits, pay, travel, etc.). They gave us folders to put our paperwork in and asked us to write our airframe preference and availability date on the cover. The technical portion was with a retired Captain. We traded stories for a little while and then basically discussed a trip he had planned out, Cincinnati – Brussels – Miami. He played out a basic scenario that sparked discussion in various areas. Taking off from Cincinnati sparked a discussion on takeoff mins and V1, VR, and V2. While flying to Brussels, Captain pulled out a prog chart and we discussed forecast weather and its affect on our flight. Landing in Brussels sparked discussion on MSA, landing mins, etc. And shooting a STAR into Miami sparked discussion on lost comm procedures. Pretty straight forward and low stress. For lunch they served a quality spread. All of the retired Captains sat with us to talk about Atlas, answer questions, and just basically chat with us. Outstanding group of guys with some really cool stories and great insight on the goods and others of the company. For the HR portion, I had a retired Captain and an HR rep who was also the senior Flight Attendant Instructor. Both super nice and went out of their way to make me feel comfortable. Questions I remember,
-How’d you get involved in aviation? (Intro).
-TMAT you had a conflict with a superior.
-Favorite job?
-WWYD, Capt paid for dinner and then said he was going to go out afterward. No one else wanted to go and in the morning he shows up smelling like alcohol.
-Hardest part about transitioning to civilian flying? How will you handle it?
I tried to weave into most of my answers the fact that being gone for up to 17 days is good with my family and I and stressed the positives of it (see the world, explore new places with buddies, etc.) vs. the obvious negatives. I am a glass half full kinda guy so …… Really felt like I was genuine, gave solid answers, and developed a good rapport.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? <60 days
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I had a friend submit my resume via Atlas’ internal rec system. I also attended a job fair which is where I was offered the interview. I had heard that meeting with Atlas reps in person makes all the difference and in my case it did. If you’re serious about Atlas I highly encourage you to meet with them at an event.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 1 week
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No issues with paperwork.
Technical Test Questions As stated above, weather questions regarding METARS/TAFS (and all the codes at the end we usually don’t read), Prog charts, pressure systems. Lighting questions, discerning info from approach plates, applying Part 121 info to scenarios. Pretty basic things but some that I hadn’t looked at in a while.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? As a military guy, I am new to the Part 121 world. While Part 121 info is not necessarily hard, as it was new to me I had to spend a little extra time prepping my knowledge in that area.
HR Questions See General Overview section above.
Cog Test N/A
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 3 months.
How did you prep?
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. It definitely helped me to develop a framework for how I wanted to present myself and my stories. The online portion also helped me to start brainstorming and jog my memory for the stories I wanted to tell. I did one in person seminar; however, I decided not to do a top off as I felt it would make me sound too canned. I felt the one in person seminar was enough to get me in the right frame of mind and allow me to be myself come interview time.
Any additional information you would like to add. Got the email the following week that I am in the pool and awaiting a class date. Atlas actually does seem like a cool place with some unique flight and travel opportunities. Most people I know that have been at Atlas have since moved on to other companies; however, they all have had good things to say about their time there and that they actually miss the flying. Atlas affords one the ability to fly wide body international right out of the gate and you never know what kind of trips you’ll be doing and cool layovers you may have. Just like any flying job, there are goods and others and QOL really depends on if the lifestyle fits the needs of you and your family. For me it does. If you don’t mind potentially being gone for 17 days straight and you enjoy traveling, Atlas could be a good fit. Overall, I had a great experience and I am looking forward to getting started.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I would have done my interview prep at my 1 year out mark. It would have just been nice to rack my brain and prep my stories at a point in time when I had less going on.
