Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No issues at all. Navy blue logbooks, NATOPS jacket, FITREPS (EVALs from my enlisted days)and my Air Force FEF folder. I’m Navy but have been flying with the Air Force for the last 3 years.
Technical Test Questions I didn’t think it was too bad. RST questions seemed similar and I was able to narrow down to at least 2 on the 4 multiple choices answers of the difficult ones. Finished the test with 17 minutes left to spare on the 60 minutes allowed. I did not go back and review. I figured I either knew it or didn’t and I accepted my first thought to an answer and didn’t want to change it. I think it really was because I started studying so early (a year out) and the exams I took at RST, allowed me to review concepts I didn’t know. I used EEPP 11th edition last year and now I think its up to 13th edition. A lot of good info in here as well but I don’t think it helped me that much on top of the RST materials. I left it on my desk at work and occasionally I would flip to something and read a bit. Every time I would hear something I didn’t know, I started with that book. But my main focus for the last 2 weeks leading up to the interview was the course work tests and exams on the RST website. Highly recommend that!
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Not that it was hard, but just slowed me down…lead radial math, descent rate calculations, fuel burn and of course understanding CG fore and aft loading concepts.
HR Questions – Tell us about yourself from High School – I gave my 5-minute speech, no one was timing.
– College questions: GPA improved from H.S.,why?
– Doug: What makes you a good candidate for Delta?
– Doug: Why did you want to be a pilot?
– Bill: Are you a good instructor? What would your students say about you?
– Tom: If you were flying with me and I made a mistake, how would you handle it?
– Doug: Follow up – Have you made a mistake in the T-6? What mistake did you make in the P-3?
– Bill: As a Delta pilot, what is your responsibility to public relations?
– Doug: Tell me about a time you had to deal with confrontation?
– Bill: WWYD if you received a bomb threat from dispatch in flight?
– Bill: TMAAT you had to deal with someone that was unfit for duty?
– Tom: Have you ever been to NYC? Want to go back? (NYC is the trend now)
Cog Test RST prepares you well. 8-10 flag men, 4-5 math problems. I got to ‘M’ on the 1-A, 2-B test. Honestly, I was scoring in the 800-860 range on the RST cog trainer and felt like I rocked that thing. It was way easier than RST which is good when everything else is stressful.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? A year and half out. Started using Emerald Coast when I first signed up for MIL2ATP and it was a great way to practice talking out load to others in an interview format.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast Interviewing Consultants (ECIC) for interview prep. 2 webinars and a sit down seminar. – Definitely worth it. Not so much for the scenario’s, which by the way kept repeating after about the 3rd time I did it, but to be able to interact with another person while under stress. They help you come up with traits/stories that you will need during your interview as well as how to answer questions.
Any additional information you would like to add. Learn to call people by their names. Practice this strategy out and about before you get there. I did this with grocery store employees, coffee shop, anywhere where people had name tags. If you scan my HR question block, I still remember the interviewers names. I was really bad at this and it paid off during the interview. Just don’t overdo it. For example, don’t say “Great question Tom…What I would do is…blah blah blah”. Don’t sound like a robot.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No. Read as many Trip Reports as you can and this will help with the unknown factor and when finished, pay it forward.
