General Overview of Experience Not as good as the others. Of the three I’ve done (DAL, UAL, SWA), this was least impressive. While waiting in the cafeteria to be taken back for the interviews, lots of pilots and employees stopped by to say hi, which was nice. Interviewers (Airbus captain and HR rep) were friendly and there was some banter, but otherwise things were pretty formal. I felt like they were in a hurry to get on to the next group. My interview was at 0800, finished by 0930, CJO received via email that afternoon. I felt like I was a name and number. “Tell us about yourself, answer these questions, take a break, answer these questions, we’re done, here’s the door. Next!”
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No.
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None at all. I spent a lot of time making detailed summary sheets of my hours that included the UAL logo. I had a printed version of my digital logbook, all military flight paperwork, designation letters, flight evaluation summaries, and career/flight hour milestones tabbed. They said they appreciated the detailed effort. I used a ProSoft binder with dividers and tabs. I also bought their high-quality plastic sleeves. Expensive but durable.
Technical Test Questions Scenario was a flight from BWI to LAX. Asked me to give a departure briefing. I went logically from walkaround, ground crew coordination, maintenance status of the jet, WX, NOTAMS, taxi route (talked about confusion, congestion, hot spots, etc), then talked about takeoff (derate, flaps, speeds, distance, abort criteria and procedures, engine-out procedures, emergency return), SID, and threats. We reviewed a SID and I was asked what the top altitude was and what happens if we get vectored off the SID. Enroute, I was asked what RVSM was, and what happens if you lose both autopilots. Arriving in LAX, we reviewed a STAR. Was asked similar altitude/airspeed questions on the STAR, then we reviewed an ILS IAP, and whether you could continue the approach if wx dropped below mins at certain points. Asked holding speeds below 6000 ft if we had to do the published missed approach procedure. Then we moved on to the CRM exercise. We used the story I gave about an emergency in the aircraft (battery overhead indications, declared the emergency and landed in Cleveland). Very much a guided discussion. Non-threat.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I think I messed up one of the answers about whether you could continue an approach if wx dropped below mins and you were outside the FAF. Everything else was pretty straightforward. RST United ground school videos were spot on. If you’re not very comfortable/familiar with Jepp SID/STAR products, definitely review the videos a few times.
HR Questions TMAAT you had a conflict with a crewmember.
TMAAT you had to change you communication style with a coworker.
TMAAT you had a stressful situation/emergency in an aircraft.
TMAAT you had a positive influence on a coworker.

They were all questions I’d seen in the HR simulator or read on past ride reports. It was easy to quickly provide a story, which made things all the more relaxing.

How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? ~6 weeks. Was prepping for an earlier interview with another airline. Once that was complete, I didn’t do much additional prep except review my TMAAT notes.
How did you prep? Webinars
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC and RST. Both helped immensely, especially RSTs UAL ground school.
