Which Airline did you interview with? Delta Air Lines
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability?
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? NA
What is your experience? 121 only
Total Flight Time 5,000-8,000
Total Turbine PIC Time < 1,000
General Overview of Experience The overall experience was very good. Delta goes out of their way to put your mind at ease. They say multiple times that they want to hire everyone they invite to interview. All they want is to get to know YOU. They want to hear your genuine thought out answers and not the canned ones they’ve heard over and over again. The setting is very pleasant throughout both days. Everyone is super friendly.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I attended a job fair earlier this year. A friend also submitted an internal recommendation. I’m not sure if either/both triggered the invitation.
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No real issues. They did mention that a couple things in my application were not where they preferred them. I had gone out on my own and got my ATP license at ATP years ago. I didn’t have that in my “Education History” section and they wanted to see that there. I also completed a semester long internship with American Airlines. I had it under “Educational Achievements” and they told me that they wanted that under “Education History” as well. I’m glad they mentioned this as one of the interviewers didn’t even know I had done the internship until this was discussed. No logbook issues whatsoever.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? I prepared for both the JKT and the COG using RST only. If I was doing it again, I would have spent MUCH less time on the test questions and more time studying the manuals/flash cards. Many of the questions on the actual test were similar to the questions, but you must understand the concepts. RST FULLY prepared me for the COG. I just kept practicing all the tests over and over again, spending more time on the ones I had trouble with. I thought the COG test during the interview was easier than the RST trainer.
Technical Test Questions I don’t remember any specific test questions. They were all somewhat similar to the RST trainers. However, to re-iterate, you must understand the concepts and not just memorize the test answers. Read through the recommended readings and understand the concepts on the flash cards and you’ll be prepared.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? No real specific question stuck out. I felt like I could have been more prepared for the JKT by reviewing more of the flash cards and digging into the books a little more than I did. I understood most of the concepts, but I could have been more comfortable with the answers I chose if I had read a little more and dug a little deeper in the engineering (engines) and aerodynamics sections.
Cog Test RST! One stop shopping!
Cog Math Questions The math concepts were very similar to all of the questions on RST. Lots of percentage questions.
HR Questions My interviewers went out of their way to make me feel at ease. They first introduced themselves and then asked me to tell them about myself from high school until now. This is the time to tell them all of your highlights during your college years and your professional years. Obviously be humble but let them know all of the good stuff (good college grades, awards and achievements etc.) After I told my story, they started asking questions. They asked why not American Airlines since I had interned there. I simply told them that I felt Delta provided a more stable work environment and that Delta is where I wanted to be; not American. They asked if I would have done anything different in regards to the training I received/college I attended. Why did I choose my college? They asked my why I never became a flight instructor? They asked me if it is permissible for an FO to ever take the controls from a CA? They asked me to describe my leadership qualities. TMAAT when you were a good leader/bad leader. How can pilots offer exceptional customer service at Delta? How would you commute to NYC? Do you feel like you know your personal limitations on the airplane you’re flying? I’m a fairly new CA with lower time so I told them that no I did not yet know my limitations. He appreciated the honesty. Hypothetical question: There’s a group of people whispering near the front lavatory. The senior flight attendant calls you and thinks their behavior is suspicious. What do you do?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 1 month
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Cage Consulting. They were very helpful for the HR process. I would strongly recommend them!
Any additional information you would like to add. Just to reiterate, be yourself! They want to hire everyone they bring in to interview!
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Don’t forget to spend good time preparing for the HR interview and not just the JKT/COG. I found myself wanting to focus more on the JKT/COG at first. Those are obviously important. However, the HR interview is where they really get to know who you are, so make sure you’re ready with solid genuine answers.
