Which Airline did you interview with? Delta
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? Invitation/Interview Interval: 44 days; Availability: 2 weeks’ notice
Did you receive a job offer? 12 months call back
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? Not really sure. Of course they don’t tell you, and I thought I did reasonably well in both the testing and HR portions. Possibly age (55) but could also have been currency–in a non-flying staff job so I haven’t flown turbine time since May ’16.
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time 5,000-8,000
Total Turbine PIC Time >2,000
General Overview of Experience 32+ years AF flying, all airlift: C-130, C-12, C-5, C-17. Instructor and evaluator pilot in both C-130 and C-12. Retiring O-6.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal recommendations; attended ATP-CTP at Delta Training Center
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? Not that they mentioned. They seemed to be satisfied with my paperwork.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST ground school and Cog test practice; also did studying of my notes from the ATP written.
Technical Test Questions Mostly aero and AIM questions. There were two engine questions that were quite simple and pretty close to RST examples. Two weather related questions, both very basic.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? One of the AIM questions had to do with alternates for supplemental carriers, which seemed odd with Delta being a flag carrier. I completely forgot that one from my ATP studies.
Cog Test All tests were much easier than the RST practices. The Previous Number While Centering the Bar test seemed to be my weak area. It was my last test and with around 20 seconds or so left, when the bar got outside the sweet spot, the arrow keys didn’t respond. While I was trying to get the bar to change directions I lost track of the numbers and it took about three numbers to get back in sync.
Cog Math Questions Very similar to the RST examples but very easy; straightforward addition/multiplication/ratios.
HR Questions After dredging up old check ride failures from pilot training and early C-130 days (1985-89), they asked 5 HR questions:
1. What do you think a Delta FO’s duties are?
2. Experiencing a MX delay and the CA wants you to tell the pasengers it’s an ATC delay. WDYD?
3. You are the CA and the chief FA is not paying attention in your premission crew briefing. WDYD?
4. What kind of leadership will you bring to the crew as an FO?
5. You are the CA. On short final in mountainous area and just above DA you enter a fog bank. You’re sure you’ll be able to pick up the approach lights if you descend a little lower. WDYD?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Approximately 5 months
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. I haven’t been on the receiving end of an interview in many years so I think it helped a lot.
Any additional information you would like to add. I was specifically asked if I used RST and ECIC to prepare for the interview. When I acknowledged I had, they specifically told me to not stick to the ECIC formula cor my answers–“just be yourself.” Don’t know if that helped or hurt; in trying to reframe my answers it’s entirely possible I said or didn’t say something that ended up scoring against me. However, they never gave any indication they didn’t like my answers, nor did they press for further clarification.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I would have liked a little more time to study up for the JKT. Even though I think I did OK on it. I several other time drains going on at the time, that I couldn’t get around, so I was a bit concerned going into the test.
