What is your experience? Military

General Overview of Experience Everyone at Delta was welcoming and professional. It is a company policy not to use cell phones, so it applies to everyone…not just interviewees. It was nice being able to talk to the folks who made it to day two of the process. They were very quick to answer questions and try to help us relax.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. My log book was never even mentioned. All I brought was a copy of my USAF Flight Records (entire package).
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? For the HR portion I joined Emerald Coast Interview Consulting. Through them I listed to every audio lesson and watched every video lesson. I attended three webinars and completed a phone top-off with a counselor…I was extremely well prepared for the HR portion. I used RST for the COG and Job Knowledge tests…I would not have passed with RST. The Job Knowledge test was hard. Out of the 50 questions I knew 30, had a good idea on 10, and flat out guessed on the rest. All my own fault…RST provided the necessary material I just should have studied it more.
Technical Test Questions I wish I could provide some specific data here, but I went to the PARB and waited to submit this form until I knew the results (should have written down the questions while they were fresh in my mind). I only had 3 or 4 math questions and I thought they were much easier than the RST prep. There were 5+ aerodynamic questions (forward and aft CG, stall speeds, L/D max, etc), 4-5 basic engine questions (compressor section, turbine section, combustion, compressor stall), 2-3 ground operation questions with pictures, 3-4 weather questions (wind shear, icing), and navigation questions.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I didn’t think any one question was harder than the other…I either knew it or didn’t all based on the amount (or lack of) studying. I rushed through the last 3 days of the 15-day program and didn’t have much time to view any of the other prep. However, I had a very confusing divert fuel/timing question because the question provided some unnecessary information. Once I weeded that out, it wasn’t too difficult…standard “your aircraft burns ### lbs/hr per engine and your planned fuel was ###. How long can you hold over your destination before having to divert?”
Cog Test The COG test at Delta was slightly easier than the RST COG trainer, although the stylist took a little getting used too.
Cog Math Questions Easier than RST. Specifically, I had enough time to actually answer them unlike the RST trainer.
HR Questions 1) In 5 minutes or less, tell us about yourself starting in high school. 2) Tell us about your education choices? 3) What was your favorite assignment and why? 4) Did you retire early or get a separation bonus (left active duty after 17 years)? 5) At what age did you get the desire to fly? 6) Is it ever appropriate to take the aircraft from a CA? 7) If the CA is high and hot on approach what would you do? 8) A FO isn’t wearing his hat? Does it again? Does it a third time?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 4 months
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast
Any additional information you would like to add. Although I received a CJO the first day and was invited to the second day there was a discrepancy in my psych eval so my application was deferred to the Pilot Application Review Board (PARB). I was asked about my childhood, getting in trouble or legal issues, time I broke/deviated from a flight rule, alcohol use, etc. I’m a pretty straight laced guy that’s never been in any real trouble, not to mention I have a Top Secret Clearance so the military has already vetted me. So I kind of got the impression the psychologist thought I was lying or covering something up. Luckily for me I wasn’t and the board approved my employment. Morale of the story is to be honest but remember the shrink represents the company, not you.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Studied the RST material in more depth.
