General Overview of Experience First of all, this is undoubtedly a pretty stressful interview. Lot of nerves and there is a lot riding on a successful outcome. That being said, the Delta employees know that and do everything they can to make it less stressful. Everyone is very kind and accommodating. They do their best to emphasize that they want you here and they are pulling for your success. The ride reports are very accurate. Read them and believe them, but take them with a grain of salt. They don’t always portray the whole picture, so maybe consider taking a break from them as your interview nears. Don’t psych yourself out.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Job fair in October, LCA, Supervisor position
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 6 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No logbook questions. Couple minor errors on my app, one of which was putting 4 years of school for a Bachelor’s that took me 5. They didn’t like that, but I thought that’s how it was supposed to be. I just don’t know anymore.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST 15 day prep, read some of Everything Explained and did the COG trainer. Scores were all over the place based on the setup I was using, in the real test you will use a stylus and that makes it way easier. Don’t obsess over your practice scores because they don’t necessarily reflect how well you will do on the real test. Real test was pretty similar, the fighter jet swerves left and right quick if you let it so you’ll need to be quicker in your corrections with it.
Technical Test Questions Most are relatively straightforward if you understand the concepts. Couple questions are worded strange/ ambiguously, but it’s easy to eliminate 2 of the 4 answers. From there, i gave it my best guess and came back to it at the end.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I don’t recall
Cog Test Much slower than RST. Quite basic, probably runs so slow because that’s as fast as MS-DOS can go. Pretty rudimentary. Just make sure and don’t memory dump the OXTIUR symbol test, as that will reappear a couple levels later.
Cog Math Questions Missed one because I ran myself out of time over-analyzing it. Be familiar with percentages.
HR Questions The three guys I met with were very nice. One of the things Barry says at the beginning of the day is that HR is just a pilot talking to some other pilots about pilot stuff. True. While I am glad I did Emerald Coast and I appreciated the insight into the process, I really only used the introduction (which they wanted to be 5 min, mine was a little short cuz I had been basing it off 3). They don’t have time for these extended diatribes in which you wax philosophical about that time back in Guadalajara in June of 1992. Not a ton of TMAAT, maybe one or two, then some WWYD. They didn’t press too hard on those, each scenario went a bit further than real life would have but didn’t get close to having a drunk captain slap my phone out of my hand or something like that. They asked when I would try to solve with Pro Standards versus the Chief Pilot, again, these guys want you to do the right thing but not call the company, freak out and throw your co-workers under the bus every time you see them drinking a tonic water with lime in it.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 4 weeks
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast. Yeah it helped get my thoughts in order and prime some scenarios. That being said, Delta is looking for honesty and authenticity over everything else so do not fall into the trap of being too canned or rehearsed. They will actively try to get through that if they think you are being a politician. I highly recommend at least a few webinars, they are a significant time investment, but it really helps to talk in front of others and glean some ideas from their stories as well.
Any additional information you would like to add. Try to relax. Easier said than done I know, but this interview is not terribly difficult. The computer testing is not that hard, and HR just wants to get to know the real you. Give them that. Much of the stress is fear of the unknown. I walked over the day before to ensure I knew how to get there, and had dinner with the interview group the night before. Highly recommend that. The day of, we all walked over as a group, and that made it much easier than slinking in solo and then trying to meet everyone while on the biggest interview of your life.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Stressed less about the JKT/ COG, and got rolling on HR prep sooner
