General Overview of Experience Needless to say, this was a very nerve racking but exciting experience. It’s handled by the Pilot Recruiting department in a very professional and friendly manner. Many of our group of interviewees met up the night before and I believe this was a great help to me and probably the others too. It’s just a way for everyone to get together build some comradery and laugh about that fact you all have the same nervous energy. The interview day started as many other ride reports have stated. At 7:45 you will be brought into the office in groups of 3 or 4 to hand in your 2 stacks of required paperwork. We were then given temporary badges for the day. We then gathered in the kitchen area until about 8 or 8:15. Captain Holmes then brought us back to the conference room to tell us how the process was going to go. He dispelled many roomers and emphasized being yourself. He also emphasized using the word “Customer” versus “Passenger”. I remember him actually tapping the table while saying this. I will say that our group had guys dressed in Grey, Blue and Black suites; a multitude of ties with some having absolutely no red in them, and shoes ranging from Black to Brown. Our group was split by alphabetical top to bottom order. First half did HR in the morning with the other group doing testing, vise versa in the afternoon. There is a lot of waiting, sometimes all by yourself, so be prepared for this. Cell phones and any other electronic devices are not allowed to be seen at any point while on Delta’s campus. I left all my stuff in my car.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Attended the October job fair and had an internal recommendation.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? I had transferred all my times into electronic form, but I brought every log book I’ve ever had. Probably overkill, but all my endorsements and sign offs were in the paper logs so I brought them just in case. No issues with my app, but I was asked A LOT of questions off of it. I recommend knowing absolutely everything you have on it. I also brought in all of my 91, 135 and 121 training records which they said was more than they asked for, but seemed pleased I had them.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST 15 day checklist. I had enough time to do this 2 times over. The second time through I focused more on weak areas. I actually got burned out studying close to the end, so pace yourself. All the information you will need is somewhere on the RST website.
Technical Test Questions These were all over the map for our group. I got a couple math questions, but most of mine was Aero and turbine engines. I had a couple questions about arcing and when to do the procedure turn, but there was a chart to reference. Some guys got more math, but most didn’t get anything about weather. I recommend answering all the questions as you go through as it’s hard to go back quickly. This way in case you run out of time you at least answered all the questions.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? No question stands out, but none were completely foreign either.
Cog Test As for the COG, please know that the actual cog is a little different because Tito had to make some changes. The remember the previous number section (not the remember the number backwards one) is a single box and goes much slower than RST. Also the symbol, arrow, color section is split into 5 different instructions. Read every instruction carefully, I believe I messed this up because I went too fast. All in all much slower than RST’s Cog trainer.
Cog Math Questions I believe I completely bombed this section. I had read that the cog math was easier than RST, but not in my case. Every single question I got was a reverse percentage. I literally guessed on 3 of the 4. I will say, the others in my group didn’t get nearly as many reverse percentage problems. All this being said, I must have passed the COG despite my struggles in the math section.
HR Questions This was the highlight of the day for me. Not that I think I did great, but that my interviewers were so professional and courteous. Our entire group had a 4th interviewer because they were doing training that day. It’s a very small room, and it got a bit smaller with the 4th person. My interviewers had a combined 96 years at Delta, so it was very impressive. They started by giving a quick introduction and then I was asked to initial and sign my application. The HR rep then asked me to tell them about me (no time limit given). After that they proceeded to questions they had off my app.
– “You have a good grade point average and played college athletics, how did you balance all this?
– Asked me about how I got into flying, and specifically about an intro to aviation course I took in high school.
– Asked specifically how I prepared for the interview and if I used prep services.
– Do you have any other apps out? If so, where and have you interviewed there?
– Of all your jobs, which one do you think prepared you best for Delta?
After this the interview shifted to the situational questions.
– Diamond Elite passenger has a 3 bag and your flight attendant is uncomfortable. How would you handle this situation?
– You are a new captain and your senior FO is doing your flows. How would you address this situation?
– Do you have any questions for us?
If there were any more I don’t remember them. Bottom line is this was really like having a conversation with a group of people you havn’t met before. There was absolutely no “go cop, bad cop”. I really felt they wanted to get to know the real me.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Hit it pretty hard the last 2 weeks.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? I used EC and Aero Crew Solutions and they both helped. Aero Crew Solutions was face to face and that was very beneficial. In the end I was very careful to just have ideas in my head about different situation. None of my answers that came out as planned in the interview.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
