General Overview of Experience: I rented a car and stayed at the Doubletree right across the street. I showed up to the interview building just a little before 11:45 for a 12:30 interview. I checked in with security and got a visitors badge. Everyone was incredibly nice and welcoming. Almost all the pilots walking by would tell you “good luck, we want you here!” There was a room you can leave your baggage if you had any. I just had a backpack with all my logbooks and brought that back with me. We all gathered in the cafeteria until we were taken back to a waiting room. There they took all our logbooks and told us a few things before a pilot to came and took us back for our interview. One by one we were taken back for our interview. Once back in the interview room I was again given a brief of how the interview would run. TMAAT and then the technical portion. They provided a pad of paper and pen to use. After talking 3-5 minutes about myself we went into the TMAAT. After the TMAAT we took a short break and then went into the technical portion. Overall process was roughly two hours.

Technical Test Questions: You’re the captain on a flight from Denver to Los Angeles with a new FO right off of OE. I briefed everything like I would normally and tried to emphasize “threats” since United is big on that. He asked a few questions regarding the departure like what the top altitude was. Then on the departure what altitude would you climb to if given “climb via” vs “climb and maintain.” At cruise I was given an “IDG disconnect”. Checklist has you start the APU. He asked if I would declare an emergency, I answered no since I still have two electrical sources. After talking through the EP we fast forwarded to the arrival. Similar basic questions on the STAR. I was vectored off the STAR and asked when I would plan to start a decent to reach the bottom altitude (3 to 1 rule) I then briefed the arrival and approach. Wind shear advisories were in effect so he wanted a brief to include threats involving a go-around do to wind shear. I was given a wind shear warning on final so I went around. I talked through the wind shear recovery for my aircraft. I was put into holding and then asked to talk through my thought process on what I would do now. Wind shear advisories were still in effect for LAX so I got the weather at BUR and ONT. BUR had a wet runway, variable winds, and a 5,000 ft runway (which is the minimum landing distance for this scenario). ONT was OVC at 1,000, variable winds, and 10,000 ft runway. After declaring a fuel emergency due to landing with less than minimums, I elected to land at ONT with the longest runway. He then asked how much fuel I think I would land with. That completed the technical portion.
HR Questions: After talking 3-5 minutes about myself we went into the TMAAT.
They asked me: TMAAT you updated or changed a process.
TMAAT you made a decision a co-worker disagreed with.
TMA your most difficult flight and how you handled it.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 2 weeks
Any additional information you would like to add: They want you there. Everyone was extremely friendly and inviting.
