General Overview of Experience Extremely professional and courteous. They do their best to put you at ease, but make no mistake- the stress is bananas. The HR panel and Psych are friendly, but in the HR portion, they may try to push you away from your answer just to see how you react. If you are confident in your answer, stick to it. Safe, legal, efficient, protect the brand, customer service. At the end of day one you will feel like you’ve been on a battlefield with the other folks interviewing, and one by one, every fifteen minutes or so they will get their names called and you can feel the air get sucked out of the room as you are absolutely sure your name is next. That is by far the worst part of the process and I wish they did it differently, but I’m sure they have their reasons.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? DGI.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No.
Technical Test Questions Many were identical to the ones I studied on RST, but understand the concepts and get used to doing math in your head and read the questions twice. Nothing unexpected, but there were a couple I flat guessed on. Like most multiple choice questions, you can pretty easily rule out two of the answers and give yourself a 50/50 shot.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I wish I could remember, but at that point I was running on a combination of adrenaline and caffeine, and nothing really stands out.
HR Questions Captain is constantly high and fast on final, how do you handle this. I fleshed that one out with several people including my HR prep and a couple of current Delta Pilots, but the HR panel didn’t seem to like my answer and pushed me on it. May have been them trying to rattle my cage or maybe I was just giving a dumb answer. I don’t know. Passenger thinks you are drinking, what do you do? Keep in mind that by the time it comes to your attention, chances are that the rumor has spread around the cabin. If you are going to remove yourself from the flight you will need to make a PA announcement, so think about what you will say. Flying a visual approach at night in the mountains and you briefly lose sight of the runway. You know the answer to this one.
Cog Test Easier than the RST tests. No surprises, just follow the directions.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? did several interview preps with various people and organizations. started about four weeks out, and the last one was about a week prior.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Aero Crew Solutions. Very helpful. Also attended every seminar and info session I could and had a couple of friends who work at Delta grill me on HR stuff.
Also read “How to land a top paying airline job” and highly recommend that.
Any additional information you would like to add. Study every day, and use every resource you have at your disposal to improve your odds. Ignore all the garbage rumors you hear about the color of your underwear or “they’re only hiring people born on Tuesdays” or where to hang your jacket. They are looking for people they want to work with who can do the job and think in real time. It’s not easy, but there’s no reason to overthink it and end up worrying about the wrong things.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Wish there was a way to prep for the Psych eval, but by design there isn’t. The MMPI-2 is a huge wildcard because nobody knows what it measures or how, or even what they want. The in person psych eval was very relaxed and almost enjoyable. At least I thought it was until I got the dreaded PARB email. Now I get to spend another couple of weeks questioning my sanity…so that’ll be fun.
