General Overview of Experience Fantastic experience! Awesome HR team and Captains/FOs you will meet! True to their word United was very friendly from the time I stepped onto the crew bus and throughout each phase of the interview process. All the pilots I met were helpful and one even made a call to HR on my behalf. They all had good things to say about United and wished me success. The crew bus tip is a standard $1, so make sure you have a few. Doubletree will take you to/from the training center. Drop your bags at United Security. The interview was all straightforward and efficient time-wise. As soon as I sat down they handed me the red pen and advised us to not change any hours unless they are more than one hundred off. I wore the standard blue suit, as did the other interviewees there that day. I also wore black shoes and a red/blue striped tie. I did not bring a resume but I would highly recommend it. HR mentioned that it is not a requirement. I think the HR panel and Technical Skills Captain use the resumes to get a quick look see at you before they meet you. The CRM video is quick so be prepared as soon as it starts to identify errors the crew makes. When I finished the interview it was :10 after so they all said go now and you can make the bus that leaves at :15 after, so I did. My advice is to smile a lot, be warm, friendly and courteous but don’t overdo it with the HR team or the other pilots in the room. The team there is so nice and professional it reinforced why I wanted to work at United.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Used Charlie Venema for application assistance. Otherwise I did not make any phone calls or have anyone contact CPs or HR.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? I had one error where I put “hours” in a block that was meant for “sorties.” I made the correction on line prior to the interview but it was not in time so I had to use the red pen. So just like a check ride, don’t let a mistake affect the ret of your performance.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Studied Jepp STARS and SIDS, Trip Reports and FAR/AIM. Memorized the call-outs. I downloaded the free version of JeppView and used that to study SIDS and STARS, it as very helpful
You don’t have to be a Jepps or 121 “expert” to pass this portion but you must know all the Call-Outs and Trip Report emphasis items.
Technical Test Questions If vectored off s STAR can you continue on the profile descents?
On a SID if given a new clearance can you deviate from any/all crossing altitudes?
I used the word query on both questions and recited the AIM guidance.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? The CRM video comes quick so be prepared to listen to the call outs the crew makes and note any deviations from SOPs or industry best practices for EPs and crew interaction. I discussed them with the Captain as the video played.

Cog Math Questions N/A
HR Questions 1. TMAAT you used the crew to help you? (I used a big hydraulics failure I had)
2. TMAAT you mentored or helped a coworker? (I used an example of an FO/CP I was asked to fly with that was having trouble with his Capt/PIC upgrade)
3. TMAT you made a good decision for the company that your co-workers did not like or agree with? (My example was a tactical mission I wx canceled and the other aircraft flew anyway and went into hazardous wx)
4. TMA the most influential leadership decision you made? (The Captain clarified that it could be a group of decisions, I used examples I had rehearsed that showed my good leadership in terms of accomplishing the mission and balancing that with a genuine interest in the people I work with and serve.)
5. Why UAL? (I gave them my honest answers, very prestigious company, new airplanes I want to fly, industry leader in pay/benefits and good Capt upgrade potential which will help me get three more boys through college)
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Two months
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast
Any additional information you would like to add. With each answer I worked in genuine examples of me as a leader, company policy follower/supporter, conscientious pilot and a person who takes a genuine interest in the well being of others. My daughter in law in an actress so I rehearsed with her, every little bit helps if you can get practice on theme communication.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No
