General Overview of Experience Fantastic experience. It is a first class organization and they treat you great. The majority of our interview group met the night before for dinner (found each other on facebook) which was a great help to calm the nerves and talk with the other pilots that are all super qualified with various experiences. Our group had people hired with all different color suits, ties, and shoes. It is NOT necessary to have a dark suit, black shoes, and red tie, but do whatever makes you feel comfortable. Most people stayed at Hilton which is a 5 minute walk away. I stayed at doubletree (shuttle ride to training center) and we had people at a couple different hotels. Day 1 starts with everyone meeting by 0730 at the training center (again, it was nice to have met people the night before). You wait in the lobby and they collect paperwork in groups. You then go to the waiting area (with snacks, water, tea, coffee, etc.). It is a nice big room with plenty of places to sit, but most people are nervously pacing (like me). Called back at 0800 to meet with the main pilot who runs the show for about 15 minutes to answer some questions. Even before that, you have the schedule posted in the waiting room. There were two HR sessions in the morning (alphabetically by last name will do HR first), and the testing for people with last names starting at the end of the alphabet. Lunch at about 1130. Swap in afternoon. The COG testing came very easy for me. I only practiced a couple times on RST, and the real test was WAY easier. There is also a personality test (just answer honestly). Last was the Job Knowledge test. I studied mainly by taking the RST tests and flashcards. I did not feel very confident after the test, but I passed, so it all worked out. Don’t stress too much on the JKT, jut know the concepts. HR portion will be discussed below in more detail. But the team looks over all your paperwork, then the HR rep will come get you and you will meet in small room at round table with 1 HR rep and 2 pilots (1 retired). HR lasted about an hour for everyone (+/- 10 mins). I took my coat off and drank the bottle of water (one guy in my group drank 6 bottle i think, haha, and he passed). Just be yourself. After you are done with everything, the wait is the worst. I think they do this differently every time, but they will come get those who don’t pass quietly and debrief them on their own. Whoever is left get the invite to day 2. On day 2, show is 0630 for MMPI, drug testing, meet with psychologist, picture, and fingerprinting. Very straight forward, just be honest with everything. Don’t need to study at all for this. The psychologist will ask about your family, stress, conflicts, etc. (TMAAT questions) to get to know you. Overall, it was very nerve-wracking, but worked out well, and was a great experience. Big picture, I think the HR portion of the whole process is the most vital, but even so, just be yourself.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? <60 days
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal rec email sent directly to hiring department.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. just make sure to have all papers they ask for, and proofread your app.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST. Cog was very easy (but I am generally good at those types of tests). The real test way easier than RST. JKT I found to be difficult, even after doing RST. But I passed, so I don’t know what score you need. I mainly just studied the Flashcards and Test to understand the concepts.
Technical Test Questions Don’t remember many of them, but I wasn’t too confident. maybe about 60-70% of them were close to RST questions.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Too much information to cover, the giant test bank covers EVERYTHING!
Cog Test Very easy. Take your time.
Cog Math Questions simple. (easier than RST)
HR Questions HR panel was very welcoming with HR person and 2 pilots (1 active, 1 retired). They offer to take your coat and offer you water, i took them up on both. Just be yourself how you would normally act. Then, the HR person took 2 mins to explain the process, and they each introduced themselves in 20-30 seconds. HR rep then asked me to tell them about myself in 3 or so minutes. After my intro, the HR rep asked pointed questions about my app such as: why did you go to this college? Why not XXX college? Why did you choose your major? How and when did you get interested in flying? Basic questions about volunteer experience. they did not even address any of my jobs or flight hours or places i’ve lived. Pilots then asked about a training failure listed (not a big deal, just own up to it and what you learned). I was then asked the following questions:
-TMAAT a Captain asked you to do something you didn’t agree with
-WWYD: Female FO is not wearing her hat while walking through terminal
-Why is complacency bad, and how do you avoid it?
-WWYD: Night flight into NTA in IMC with burnt out cockpit lighting (MX says good to go). Retired Capt got pushy and tried to get me to change my mind on this one.
-WWYD: going into field and super windy and gusty… do you make PA announcement (if so, demonstrate the PA announcement)
A few more questions based on my own experience and answers to their questions, but those were the main points.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? A few months.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC, yes. The Top Off is great. My recommendation is to sign up for ECIC now and watch the videos and attend 1 webinar (no matter how far out from interview). Just doing 1 webinar will get your mind caged on how to start answering questions and coming up with stories. An in-person seminar is good too. Then do a few more webinars in the months leading up to interview. Best advice: say your answers out loud, find about 10 good stories that cover the main topics: safety, CRM, leadership, failure, conflict, etc. When it gets closer, get some pilot buddies to run a mock interview (I did not do this, but really wish I had). I will set this up myself for my buddies going through the process now.
Any additional information you would like to add. Nope.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Not stress as much (harder to do than to say).
