Which Airline did you interview with? FedEx Express
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? 4 weeks between invite and interview
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time 2,000-3,000
Total Turbine PIC Time 1,000-2,000
General Overview of Experience FedEx was a great atmosphere to interview in and the people there really do put you at ease. I went in nervous (as we all do) and was immediately put at ease. I had heard that the Panel Interview could be confrontational but this was not the case. There were very few times during the process where we were not smiling or laughing. I’ve interviewed at other companies and this was my favorite experience by far!
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I honestly don’t know what triggered it but 2 days before going on terminal leave I changed my availability to “Currently Available” and the day after I went on terminal I had an email inviting me out.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 3 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No. All the gouge shared in the RST and Facebook forums was spot on.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST is the way to go! There were no surprises.
Technical Test Questions I did the RST prep and read “Everything Explained for the Professional Pilot” and found that I was more than prepared to pass. After going through the test once I had marked probably 10 questions that were tricky. Otherwise, I didn’t find it that difficult after doing the “15 Day Checklist” on RST but my test experience was different from other guys in my group. I predominantly had Aero, Engines/Systems, and Takeoff and Landing Data questions whereas other guys had 15 questions on navigation.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I can’t recall.
Cog Test As advertised!
Cog Math Questions Much simpler than RST. RST was great prep but the questions I had during the interview were much more basic.
HR Questions It was a 2-way conversation. They opened up about themselves then gave me a nice window to tell them about me. We rolled from that straight into questions about how I would handle certain situations followed by why they should hire me. I went into my bag o’ tricks from EC. I smiled and engaged directly.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I had gone to an Emerald Coast seminar probably 10 months before my FedEx invite and did my “Top Off” a week prior.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast was great! I found that while they gave me the tools necessary to “put my best foot forward,” I was very comfortable just speaking plainly and from the heart during the interview.
Any additional information you would like to add. The gouge on using the debrief after the SBI to correct mistakes during the SBI was spot on. I felt as though I screwed up the SBI as soon as the clock expired! However, I sucked it up, smiled, and let them walk out of the room before I started kicking myself in the butt. I did that for about 5 seconds then got to work thinking of how I could have done better. I thought of things and better ways to accomplish various elements. When they came back in they had their poker faces on and I went into cracking jokes about how I could have been better or clearer with my communication. Even with the jokes they were still stoic but I stuck to my guns and kept to the confidence, smile, and eye contact. Even in debrief they tried to get me to change my choice. I stuck to my decision while remaining professional and courteous to their inputs and “recommendations.”
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? The information on RST was overwhelming but if you stick to the checklist you’ll be fine. Just take it day-by-day.
