General Overview of Experience Great experience. AmyLyn and Doris were awesome! Everyone in the pilot recruiting office was great. The HR interview was as briefed as was the tech portion. I was at the beginning of a cycle so I had to wait 10 days to find out, but they will tell you when to expect notification.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Attending OBAP was the thing that helped. I had a fastpass and made some very good connections. I also had 10 internal recommendations.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. However, make sure you are keeping your application up to date. You don’t want to go in there and have to make a ton of red ink changes.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? N/A
Technical Test Questions SID/STAR/Descend Climb VIA, Hot spots
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? The gouge is spot on for the technical. Practice YOUR briefs for the technical. Don’t try to give a United brief. Get familiar with Jepp Flight deck pro. Study hot spots and SIDs/STARs to include climb via and descend via. They had a couple really tricky climb/descend questions. Thought I had it down cold, but I learned a couple things.
Cog Test
Cog Math Questions
HR Questions They asked a couple 2 part questions which kind of threw off my SARR framework.
1. TMAAT you were asked to do something outside of your core responsibilities and what was the outcome.
2. TMA a Captian or leader that you admire and how have you incorporated their traits into your leadership skils.
3. TMAAT you mentored a peer.
4. TMAAT you lost credibility and what did you do to restore it.
5. Why United?
Be prepared to talk about any black marks you have on your application. Tickets, busts etc.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I started prepping pre OBAP so almost 6 months. It’s never too early.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast, FAPA
They were both great help. I don’t think you need more than one, it just sort of happened that way for me.
Any additional information you would like to add. I know most people preach maximum contact during the interview process. For example take the crew bus, talk to flight attendants and pilots, socialize with fellow interviewees. Just keep in mind that every contact is a chance to step on your schwartz. You will have to figure out for yourself if the possible negatives out way possible positives.
I passed on one of the questions that I really didn’t have a strong story for. They seemed 100% OK with it. I was very thoughtful about the pass though, give it some thought first.
If you have a great story you want to tell but it doesn’t exactly fit ask them about it. More than likely they will say sure. I should have done this for one of the questions
Force yourself to live practice your stories. All of them.
Stayed at the Double Tree. They had a good military rate.
Took Uber to/from airport. Shuttle to training center a little too logistically challenging.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Concentrate on the 7 key situation stories (Emerald Coast). Have these down cold. Almost any question can be bent to one of these stories. I had dozens of stories and I think it made it tougher on me.
