General Overview of Experience Great introduction to interviewing at a major airline. Everyone at American wants you to be there and they want to hire you. They will all tell you that several times and do their best to put you at ease throughout the process.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No Issues or questions. I created an excel spreadsheet listing all of my flight time with an overview by aircraft up front.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? There is no real way to prepare for the COG at AA. The biggest thing I did was remember to laugh at myself as the tests got progressively harder and I failed. The test will make you fail and then reset to an easier baseline. Have fun and laugh.
Technical Test Questions N/A
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A
Cog Test – Dots in a circle. 25 minutes. About 10 minutes into this one, my mind wandered to my rehearsed introduction for the interview panel and I missed an entire trip around the screen, although I think I was still hitting the green button.
– Patterns. This one was fairly easy for me and I only skipped one.
– Dots forming a square. 20 minutes. Just know that when one dot is added, another is removed. About every 20-30 dots added, the computer takes a 5 second break and does not add or remove anything. This is normal, the program didn’t stop working. Sit back as far as possible so you can get a good scan of the entire screen.10 min break to laugh and re-cage your brain.- Simon. 4 minutes. Concentrated on the lights and rudder pedals. Just blew off the tones.
– Math. I think I was able to solve 3-4 questions in the allotted time while skipping several.
– Fly the triangle. 10 minutes. Once again, got to laugh at myself. If you pull up on the joysticks at all, they come off and you only have a small lever left to work with. Luckily that didn’t happen to me.
– Cube pattern. 17ish questions. I only marked no solution for one, maybe two. This was one of the easier sections for me.
– Map and landmarks. Don’t remember how many maps I had. Had around 8 items on the first map and I quickly drove it down to 2-4. I tried the fingers on the screen trick and that seemed to help a bit.
Cog Math Questions Completed several questions and skipped 3-4. I am almost convinced that some of the questions don’t have answers and they want to see how long you stay at something before moving on.
HR Questions The HR portion was extremely laid back and conversational. Having the desks under the DC-3 in the museum was a great way to set a relaxing atmosphere. I interviewed with a 777 Check Airman and a senior FO.
Did not receive the “Tell me about yourself” question directly; however, they asked initially if I was married and had any kids which led to a conversation about my past and military career. I also did not receive the “Why American” question.
Others:
– TMAAT a time you were concerned about safety and how did you handle the situation?
– TMAAT your supervisor counseled you because they didn’t like what you were doing. What did you do and how did you handle it.
– TMAT you improved a safety process.
– The last one was something about conflict and supervisory issues. Since two of my earlier answers dealt with that, we just talked about what the interviewers had done in the past and more chit chat about me.WWYD:
– You have been cleared for takeoff on RWY 27 and taken the RWY on a hot, humid day. There is a cell moving from the west with winds 290/14G23. Aircraft before you departed and immediately had to deviate 190 for weather. Aircraft just landed on Rwy 33 and reported a 15 knot loss of airspeed on final.- Still on the gate, just get word of a 2+ hour maintenance delay. You overhear a passenger in 1st class yelling at the head FA. What should you do?- You are flying from Chicago to JFK with the weather at mins and tops at FL230. What are you thinking and how are you going to approach this situation.- Holding short on RWY 29, WX light freezing drizzle (ATIS), -2, deiced and have a 4-minute holdover time. Jet just landed and said braking action was fair to poor, and tower calls you cleared for T/O. You have A/C.
– You’re the CA, you’re sitting at the gate with your crew waiting for your inbound aircraft to arrive. You overhear the flight attendants laughing about the way a passenger looks, you also notice that some passengers are looking at the crew and them at you. What should you do?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Started with ECIC about 10 months before I interviewed.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. Can’t say enough about the professionalism of ECIC. Since I had never really interviewed for anything outside the military, the was the perfect way for me to focus my thoughts and gain confidence.
Any additional information you would like to add. Thanks to Tito for everything RST/Facebook does to help prepare you for your interview and for all the previous TRs. What a great asset.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No.
