Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? 121 only
Total Flight Time Greater

General Overview of Experience I know it’s been said many times before, but the whole team at United does an exceptional job at putting you at ease. There are no tricks and they all want you to not only do great but enjoy the experience as well. With that being said, make sure you have the correct paperwork they ask for, nothing more (they don’t take it) and nothing less (apparently people are still cocking this one up for some reason).
I didn’t have any surprises and my day started exactly like the other trip reports have mentioned: hand in paperwork to Doris and AmyLyn and make corrections on the printed app they give you. The one thing that was a little different here, and it was probably my own doing, was that the application they had printed and the one I had printed were in different formats as the pages didn’t match up. Not a big deal, but it was slightly more difficult to reference than I had anticipated. The app they present you is from when you got the invite, since mine was 90 days prior I did have some changes. I corrected an old Community College GPA from high school, medical date, and flight times (they don’t care if the changes are less the 100 hrs). None of the changes were brought up in the interview.
There was just one other person at mine time slot, I did the panel first while he did the Technical Skills Assessment portion then we switched.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No. My logbooks are paper and with 9,000 hrs they are not perfect, so don’t sweat it if you have some corrections or the times don’t exactly match up (within reason of course). I tabbed all check rides, seat changes, and the last page. Also included a summary that I made of the 3 books with important events and dates that corresponded to the tabbed pages.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? N/A
Technical Test Questions The Technical Skills Assessment or TSA was very straight forward. Interviewer was a current 737 Capt in DEN and as with the rest of the UAL team, a very nice guy who wants you to do well. United sends you a packet with profiles, speeds, and a few other details such as fuel burn and performance info when you pass the Hogan. Memorize the info, period. It’s the only thing they actually ask you to know or have prepared ahead of time so I get the feeling that this information needs to be known cold, and there really isn’t an excuse if you don’t. My interviewer had me do both PF and PM callouts. The flight itself was from IAH-PHX, conducted it as a normal flight with my usual briefings, there was nothing unusual in the NOTAM’s and the weather was CAVOK. Asked a few Climb Via questions on the SID. In cruise, I got a Pack Overheat which led to running the QRH after which the pack reset and msg cleared, had a discussion with the FO and saw no reason why we wouldn’t continue to PHX. In PHX asked a few more Descend Via questions on the STAR, on approach the airport closed due to security breach which forced us to divert. Transferred control, talked to dispatch which told me to standby as they were dealing with multiple aircraft. Had 23 mins of extra fuel which was just enough to make TUS with RSV intact, I mentioned to the FO that I did not want to waste time waiting for dispatch with the fuel the way it was and decided to initiate the divert on my own. From there I went through the notification process of FA’s, Pax, and sent an ACARS divert msg to dispatch letting them know we were on our way to TUS. Then said I would set up for the approach and brief. The interview asked if there was anything else I wanted to add and I said I didn’t think so. Exercise over.
I decided on the divert to TUS because it was CAVOK and a company dest/alt listed in the Company Jeppesen pages which I noticed on the approach briefing. I included the FO (i.e. interviewer) in all the decisions but he provided almost zero input other than “ok” or “fine with me”.
The CRM video was a EGPWS event into Reno, very obvious what went wrong and how it could have been avoided.
For those of us flying 121 or multi crew aircraft, you will find the whole exercise very straight forward and like any other day at the office. For the single seat people, I think they are just looking for you to include everyone as applicable to the situation (FO, FA’s, company, PAX, etc) in your thought/decision making process. There were no tricks, just memorize the profiles packet they send and have a look through the Climb/Descend Via packet thats on the RST page and you will be fine.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A
Cog Test N/A
Cog Math Questions N/A
HR Questions Don’t remember the exact questions, and truthfully you’ll drive yourself nuts studying for specific questions. The panel consisted of two very nice interviewers, a SFO based Capt and a LAX based HR lady. The interview started with a brief introduction from them and then they asked me to introduce myself. After which I got 5 TMAAT questions which had to do with “positive contribution to the company “, “didn’t agree with a policy”, “stepped up to a leadership position amongst peers or outside your normal duties”, “crises or challenging situation”, “exceptional customer service”, and lastly “why United”.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I started brainstorming stories after I passed the Hogan, this was nearly 90 days out which was more than enough time. I really didn’t crack down until about 30 days prior.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Cage… they were great.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
