General Overview of Experience As you’ve likely read, a well-oiled machine. Everyone seems to understand the stress level and they attempt to put you at ease. If you are prepared, it will be a good experience.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Golden emails sent on my behalf 22 months and 11 months prior to invite. Suspect the increase in hiring is allowing them to make progress on the backlog.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 6 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. Two paper logbooks and a nicely bound copy of the remainder from my electronic logbook. Hours matched within 5 hours between logbooks and application. Application was professionally reviewed twice over 2-year period and reviewed by me countless times to ensure accuracy.
Technical Test Questions Nothing unexpected here…if you’ve practiced with RST until comfortable, you’ll succeed
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Without test results, it’s tough to know for sure. All my questions were in line with the concepts learned/reviewed in the RST program (maybe I’m lucky?). No surprises.
HR Questions They were short an HR rep, so a retired Capt with HR experience filled in (1 active Capt and 2 retired Capts). This allowed me to use pilot speak for the interview after a brief demonstration that I can translate from pilot to passenger languages. Reviewed my application followed by the “tell us about yourself” in 3-5 mins. Other questions: why your school/major, toughest part of training, tell us about failed phase check, how do you handle young Capts? Situational questions: I’m an FO who is too slow for the Capt and he is berating me, FA says First Class passenger has too many bags, scheduling (and chief pilot) want me to violate Part 117 rest rules.
Cog Test Again, no surprises. I found the stylus easier to use than the mouse.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Two years (when I first published my app…see next question)
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC…great help. Started two years prior when I for published my apps. Gathered all my stories, did a webinar and seminar, etc. then shelved everything until the invite. Once invited, another webinar, self practice/review, and top-off. Felt quite confident walking through the door at Delta.
Any additional information you would like to add. Use the tools and resources at your disposal. Find what works best for you and use it to your advantage.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No…in hind sight. I second guessed myself during prep, concerned I was missing something or not doing enough. Now that I’m complete, I recognize the preparation tools and my genuine use of those tools prepared my well.
