Which Airline did you interview with? FedEx
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? 1.5 months
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? 121 only
Total Flight Time 4,000-5,000
Total Turbine PIC Time 1,000-2,000
General Overview of Experience I’ll never forget it. A confluence of stress, hope, nervousness, and sheer terror. Driving around MEM to and from the events you’ll see FedEx planes all over the place. That motivated me to do my best and just get through the next two days. Everyone is professional and friendly. I get the impression they want you to be confident and exude safety. They are hiring you as an FO, but evaluating you as a CA.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Application update
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? They ask you to separate what you bring into two piles. Be prepared to present your logbook, certs/docs, and college transcripts in one pile and your application paperwork, copies of certs/docs, and college transcript copies in another pile. I put some of them in a professional binder, but that was completely unnecessary as I took everything out of it to turn in anyway. I spent a lot of time making my logbook printout reflect my desire for the job (I.e., matching company colors, fonts, etc.). I didnt get any positive feedback because the interviewers reviewed it in private and then gave it back to me without saying anything. Maybe it scored me some points?
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Had around 35 days to prepare. Started with 15 day checklist, then I read Naval Aviators, EEFPP, and the RST files on the Facebook page. By the interview date, I had studied an average of 2-3 hours a day.
Technical Test Questions My test consisted of mostly aerodynamics, aircraft systems, and some FAR/AIM questions. I was cramming for the math questions in the days leading up to the test, however, the only math questions were a simple crosswind calculation and a distance to descend question (3 to 1 rule). I took the JKT last and felt mostly confident. I guessed on 5 questions or so out of 60. If I could go back and change what I studied, I would definitely read the AIM and the Pilot/Controller glossary. I just ran out of study time.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I remember being conflicted by a question on Takeoff Hold Lights. The answers were very similar, but I ended up choosing one that said the THL will extinguish before a crossing aircraft clears the runway due to the anticipated separation feature. Total guess. Had a Jepp chart and the question asked for TCH. My mind blanked and I guessed 50. What is the general procedure for dealing with an electrical fire? 3 answers had some variation of isolating the affected electrical source so the flight can continue. 1 answer said land ASAP and I chose that one.
Cog Test Very similar to RST. Minor differences in the presentation, most of which is covered in the Webinar video. This was my first test of the day, so I was nervous. I felt the weakest on the math problems and that was my 2nd level. Was scoring in the low 900s on practice tests before the interview and felt I performed at the same level on this actual test. Interestingly, the proctor mentioned in passing that the cog test will be changing very soon. Glad I got it out of the way now!
Cog Math Questions None directly from RST. Giorgio’s pizza gives away 1 free pie for every 30 sold. They sell 120 per day. How many free pies will be given away after two weeks?
HR Questions I felt the panel interview was my weakest. Totally depends on the interviewers. I didn’t get any flying story type questions. I didn’t get asked “why me?” or “why FedEx?”. Great because that’s really what I prepped for! Virtually all WWYD stuff. In total spent 40 mins or so during this part and walked out feeling less than optimistic. I left the SBI feeling confident, at least.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 2-3 weeks.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. Watched videos and listened to Audio. Did a SBI webinar. Attempted a regular Webinar but my hotel WiFi was terrible and had to bail. No top off. Highly recommend an HR prep to learn how to turn negative traits/stories into positive ones.
Any additional information you would like to add. Get enough sleep and, if you can, bring snacks and food. I was under nourished for those two days simply because of the lack of food choices around the hotel and at the interview.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? You will never feel 100% ready. Just study a bit everyday, and actively do things to de-stress leading up to the big day.
