General Overview of Experience Interviewing with FedEx was unlike any experience I’ve had before with a company. You just feel the difference when you arrive at Campus. Everything is immaculate. Every person you meet is genuinely interested and wants to see you succeed. The pilots in the break room strike up conversations and want to know more about you. Just prior to taking the Cog and JK test, Amy from HR was sure to let you know that if you had any adverse situations that prevented you from being fully prepared, she would delay the test to another time that you felt fully prepared.
Day 2 was relaxed and as comfortable as it could be. The head of hiring was hospitable and welcoming and everyone wanted you to be a part of the company. Know your stuff when you come in for the big day. When I was in the room with my two interviewers, I genuinely felt like they were doing their best to get me the job. I had the feeling they were pulling for me.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Obtained Line Check Airman position in November 2016. Masters Degree in December 2016. Updated application monthly. I did not have one internal recommendation. The question below makes me choose 1-2.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? Not one question about logbook or paperwork.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST. Some of the flashcard sets were so big on RST. The aerodynamics was 165 cards and it would reset everytime I started over. I was concerned I wouldn’t make it through them all. I ended up using Quizlet and breaking down the cards into groups of fifteen and doing three sets a day, starring the ones I didn’t know. Then I would study the starred ones. I did the same for the Gold Standard. I felt really comfortable with the knowledge by the time test day came around.
The Cog is great. You will be prepared by test day.
Technical Test Questions You will see totally new questions on the test that you’ve never seen before. But you will know the concepts of the majority of the questions from the prep. Trust that you don’t have to be perfect and just do your best.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Can’t remember specifically.
Cog Test The prep is great. You’ll be ready. Amy specifically mentioned that paying attention to the Symbol test can pay dividends by answering the bonus question. It’s weighted. It won’t kill you if you miss it, but it can save you.
Cog Math Questions Not as difficult as the prep questions.
HR Questions Tell us about yourself.
Tell us about a career setback.
If you were a Captain, how would you respond to a First Officer that appears fatigued before the flight has left the gate. Ultimately, they wanted me to reach the conclusion that it’s a showstopper on the ground.
Why FedEx?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 4 Weeks
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast – Fantastic
The prep for the Situational Based Interview was gold. I learned I needed to tighten up everything about my interaction with my FO and the GOC. Ultimately, you have to minimize your time that is wasted. You need to transfer the controls in less than thirty seconds. Mine was twenty. You need to know what information you want from the GOC. You need to summarize to your FO what you leanred from the GOC in less than thirty. Once you do this, you will have time to effectively communicate with your First Officer about his opinion. This is what the exercise is about. It’s about reviewing your communication skills. When you’re not wasting your time with the small things, you can display ability in the areas they care about. You will then debrief your event. They give you ten to fifteen minutes to break it down. Use it and be clear about what you learned. They are very fair. You just need to be ready.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I wish I had noticed the Gold Standard earlier. I also wish I had written a response to one HR question per day for the four weeks. Know your intro questions cold. And know why FedEx.
