General Overview of Experience It was a good overall experience, the day started off with a briefing of what we could expect that day. Half the group did their HR portion first, half did the COG/JKT. I did the COG/JKT portion first and honestly, if you go through RST, you will be over prepared. I felt really good heading into my HR panel.
But, after shaking the members of my panels hands, that good feeling quickly went away. They asked me how I prepared for the interview and I told them honestly, I did RST/Emerald coast. Their response was “let’s see how that works out for you, if it was worth your time and money”.
I was asked a lot questions regarding my college transcript. Math classes /economics/physics were my worst grades in college, but they weren’t terrible, they were passing grades. Those courses just didn’t come naturally to me. With that being said, I made it known I tried my hardest and went above and beyond to receive extra help. I was also grilled on a high school job that I was terminated from. They asked a lot of questions about my checkride failure (CFI oral) how/why I failed, my private pilot written how/why I failed what I did to prepare for the second take. I owned up to it, all of it. But, after that portion of the interview I felt like they either didn’t believe me, or didn’t like what I had to say.
From then on, the tone was generally negative. “TMAAT when you were supposed to fly and you didn’t”. I told a story how I was on a jumpseat to work, the crew aborted the take off for a caution, and had to go back to the gate. By the time we got back to the gate, my next option to get to work had already left. So, long story short I called up my company and got it worked out so that I could meet up with my trip at its first overnight since the trip didn’t get back to base at any point. I rented a car and drove 3 hours to do so and spent $$ out of my own pocket to help the company. I thought they would love this, since it showed my willingness to do the right thing (as opposed to calling out sick) and help the company out. But, I was told I was cutting my commute way too close and was asked if I always take one of the last flights to get to work. They asked me if I expected the company to reimburse me for the rental car.. of course I didn’t, I didn’t even ask, at the end of the day it was my responsibility to get to work on time and I didn’t, so I tried to do what I could to make the situation better. For some reason, they didn’t like that.
Another question was “WWYD, if you were a 737 captain and just landed in Atlanta, ground crew couldn’t get to the gate for 40 minutes to tend to the aircraft” so I asked some follow up questions like, are we able to pull the jetway up so we could de-plane? Are they just unable to tend to the aircraft as far as unloading/loading bags/refueling for our outbound flight? And I think a lot was lost in translation so I should have asked more questions and clarified the situation better, that is on me.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal recommendation
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 6 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST
Technical Test Questions I honestly had about 15-20 questions directly from the RST sample questions. As long as you go through most of the 15 day checklist and utilize the flash cards and sample tests, you’ll be fine. I didn’t have any equation based questions.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I don’t recall the exact question but it had to do with a specific airplane, I only knew the answer because it was a sample question on RST.
Cog Test Easier/shorter/slower than the RST trainer.
Cog Math Questions A few descent questions that’s about it.
HR Questions
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Over a month.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald coast. It helps in the sense that you can gather thoughts and correctly formulate and structure an answer before you start speaking. I think it was a good investment and would not have wanted to go into the interview without exhausting all resources to prepare as much as possible.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
