What is your experience? Military, 91
Total Flight Time 2,000-3,000
Total Turbine PIC Time
TPIC 121 hours 0
TPIC Military hours 1000-2000
TPIC 91/135 1-500
General Overview of Experience It was exactly as described in previous trip reports. The only difference was one of the HR panel pushed back on all of my answers as if they were trying to get under my skin or maybe a bad cop/good cop scenario I’m not sure. There was no other curveballs other than that.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I updated my app about 3 weeks prior to getting the invite.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. I had 3 different source documents for my flight time and brought the originals along with a summary sheet I printed from LogPro Ten. The “red pen” drill was not an issue with only a couple of admin changes i.e. a new medical date etc.
I got my paperwork back during the HR panel and nothing was said or noted on my documents so I assume there wasn’t an issue or questions.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? I did 3 United technical webinars on ECIC. Pretty much covered all you need to get through. I watched a couple of videos on briefing airline style which helped a lot. https://youtu.be/OJG2Gfwpr8c I also printed out the FAA brief on SID/STAR climb/decend via and reread through that a couple of times. https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/afx/afs/afs400/afs470/pbn/media/Climb_Descend_Via_FAQ.pdf
Technical Test Questions Take us from departure to destination as the CA and PF. I was asked to get the WX, NOTAMs and SID info from the UAL Ipad and take 5 min to get my brief together. I briefed the taxi plan, departure and standard briefing items. I was asked a couple of questions about Hot Spots (where can you find what the HS is for?) After going through the call outs, I was given a minor EP. Worked through that and continued to our destination. I was asked a couple of what altitude are you required to meet on both the SID and the STAR. Just read the FAA PDF and it answers all of the possible scenarios. I was also asked if the airport shifted arrivals to the north from the south what STAR would we use (it’s in the verbiage on the top of the STAR). We went missed approach and worked through 3 alternates and that was it. Watched a 3 min CRM video and debriefed what they did (good and bad) and that was the end of the Tech portion.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Nothing “hard” per se but I was a bit nervous and had to reread the Jepp plate a couple of times to find some answers. It is pretty straight forward if you study Jepp briefing strips and watch the video on how to give the brief along with the FAA climb/decend via, that will cover 98% of the questions. I’ve heard some people have been asked what is the holding airspeed at different altitudes, other than that it was straight forward.

HR Questions Tell us about yourself/walk us through your resume and how you got into flying.
1. TMAAT you mentored someone and what did you learn from it?
2. TMAAT you did something that wasn’t in your job description?
3. TMAAT you had a conflict with SOP and how did you handle that?
4. TMAAT something about a difficult flight (not sure how they worded it)
There were 1 or 2 others that I can’t remember because they were follow up questions from my previous answers. One follow up question was “you seem pretty successful getting people to follow your direction, tell us a time you weren’t successful or experienced resistance to your plan and how did you handle that?”
Finally why United and do you have any questions for us?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 6 weeks
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC, very much so. I really shaped my answers to all be positive and the biggest thing I learned from them was to always close the loop at the end of the story. I usually ended my stories with “what I took away from that experience” or “what I learned from that was…”
Any additional information you would like to add. I stayed at the Double Tree across the street and in the morning I met a few training captains at breakfast. I think it is important to be friendly and talk to as many people as possible…you never know who will be part of the decision to get the CJO. Everyone was super friendly and positive. Remember to always SMILE and be positive especially when you in sidebar conversations waiting to go into one of the sessions. Treat the entire time from the time you leave for Denver till you get home as part of the interview. Dress the part…treat everyone professionally…and finally just be positive and have a great attitude!
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I felt like I was pretty prepared but in hindsight, I would have recorded myself on my phone giving my TMAAT stories and smoothed those a little more. I was thrown off my the HR person pushing back so hard on my stories and kept my cool and kept smiling but I didn’t hit some of the homeruns I had prepared. If you really want to be prepped, I would have someone role play a difficult HR person sitting across a table from you and practice your stories while staying cool and always smiling.
