Which Airline did you interview with? Delta
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? about 6 weeks; could have been sooner but I wanted to be ready!
Did you include volunteer work in your application? Yes
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? n/a
What is your experience? Military,121
Total Flight Time 5,000-8,000
Total Turbine PIC Time
TPIC 121 hours
1-500
TPIC Military hours
>2000
TPIC 91/135

General Overview of Experience 5000+ Military in 5 different Aircraft; Roughly 200 in 121 (non-pic); had ZERO turbine time in last 4 years so got 121 time with regional.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Got recency of time to augment my total flight time. Rumor has it that Delta wants about 200 hrs recency if you have been out of the cockpit for some time. I was out better part of 4 years with only a handful of GA time over last 2 years. Regional helped fill in that void of recency.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 6 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? Not with logbooks. Application however they asked me to change my Date of Avail since it could not be in the past (no biggie) and asked me to elinimate “English” as a language – I had listed 3. C’mon, is English not a language…
Technical Test Questions Many were similarly worded to RST so good job there RST Team! Mine was heavy on Engine flow dynamics and temp/pressure in different engine sections as well as AFT CG loading and impacts on manuverability. 60 questions and most were similar enough to RST bank.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Plenty of Aft CG loaded questions.
HR Questions HR rep started off by saying “We have your app, resume, and records so in 2-3 minutes tell us about your flying history”. Glad ECIC had preped me for that potential curve ball. After that, it was more conversational and pilot rep did an outstanding job trying to ensure I was relaxed and could relate my experiences to what they wanted to hear at Delta. Also got: Why Delta? What makes a good training program? WWYD if FA1 calls infight saying another FA is not pulling their weight – as it unfolds, it is FA1 who is not doing her job and rest of FAs are doing her tasks. Last softball was: How would I (as a 50+yr old) handle working with a 26 year old Captain? Describe my personal leadership style in the cockpit. My overall perception was they were not AS concerned about the answers as they seemed to be checking off certain phrases used in the response: ie, for FA issue they all checked a box when I said “appropriate time and place” to discuss, not jumping to any conclusions, and would talk to another FA to see what the other side of the story was. Overall, very conversational and surprisingly a different experience than I had expected.
Cog Test While the interface is a 1980’s ATARI 2600 dot matrix one (for those of you who are old enough to understand that reference) the tests at RST really do a good job of preparing you…with the exception of the RST Balancing the ball. Their test is not like that at all and you need to keep their vertical line in the middle of the horizontal line with SMALL inputs. Large inputs increase oscilation and speed and it will get out of control quickly (you have a chance to practice this prior to the actual test). Other curve ball was the RST game 17 – numbers and symbols matching…the code is displayed during the test which is about speed and accuracy, BUT two test later they ask you to recall the code so don’t flush it!!! Otherwise, RST is great prep for these!
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Most of 5 weeks. Spent every free minute for last 2 weeks doing reading and RST test. 4-5 hours daily.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast: Absolutely! Not only did they help frame your experiences with a format to answer any question (list, WWYD or TMAAT), but you are also more confident having given your answers to someone besides a friend/spouse/etc. That allows being able to answer any question in your words with their framework.
Any additional information you would like to add. Just for expectations, the testing has 3 parts: COG, Mini MMPI (60 questions) and the JKT. There are always those guys who have a hiccup with the MMPI – be aware of what they are asking and why. It is not a joke and not to be taken lightly.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Would have liked to have had more time to complete all of the reading on RST. As it was, working full time there were many days I did not have 3 hours to read and fell behind the 15 day checklist about 5 days in.
