General Overview of Experience This was a fantastic experience. United did a wonderful job of putting everyone at ease. Everyone, including my interviewers, wanted me to get the job. Just do the prep work at home, be excited, and enjoy yourself!
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? <60 days
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? 3x internal recs
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No. For military types, have your old HARM folder line-by-lines and a Flight Time Summary Report and you’ll be fine. Have your SARM print out all of the reports that HARM no longer keeps.
Technical Test Questions I memorized the 13 briefing topics in the packet they send you. I put them in an order that makes sense for the aircraft I fly now, and I made up a brief that combined my aircraft’s specifics and some airline considerations (i.e. identifying passengers that may have issue with an egress and ensuring the FAs have a plan for them).

During my brief I was asked questions about the STAR (vectored off and not given an altitude to fly to; note grid MORA and query ATC). I had no EP, but others had benign issues in which they consulted the QRH. It’s about 50/50 on if you get one.

During arrival, I was given a report that someone reported a 15KIAS loss on final and I saw virga. I stated that I expected a microburst and that I would immediately begin a windsheer recovery. I described the recovery for my aircraft and once I was in a safe situation, I passed the jet to the FO and instructed him to hold. I informed the FA of what had happened and made a PA to the customers. I then contacted dispatch to ask for recommendations. I presented those recommendations to the FO and asked if he had any other ideas or suggestions even though it was obvious the COS was the best choice available. He recommended COS and I concurred and mentioned that I liked it because fuel was my number one consideration.

What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Nothing particularly hard. Just be ready to brief your aircraft procedures for rejected takeoff, engine-out after V1, go around, stable approach criteria, etc.
