General Overview of Experience Others before me have covered this very accurately. Everyone there is super friendly, helpful, puts you at ease, and wants you to succeed. I stayed at the Hilton. Wasn’t able to link up with my class the night before due to a FB issue on my end. Bumped into them in the lobby the next morning and we all walked over together. Disregard all of the rumors that I think have been dispelled by now in terms of what to wear, whether to take your jacket off or not (we all did), water bottles, etc… If they offer you something and you want it / want to do it, it’s not a test. We had guys in gray suits, light navy, pink ties, tie bars, brown shoes, black shoes, etc… Everyone looked professional, but wear what you’re comfortable with and don’t overthink it. Drink the coffee, drink the water, take your jacket off if you want, etc… There were only four of us, so two of us tested in the AM while the other two interviewed. They give you a time for your interview and encourage you to get out of the building. Go walk around, eat, go to the museum, etc… Day two was much more relaxed, but keep your game face on. Was done on day two by 1030.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal rec, including ATP-CTP app review
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. My original logbooks were a mess. Correct, but lots of corrected mistakes. I ended up using Logten Pro to make sure everything was correct and in a presentable format while consolidating military and GA time. That said, I still turned in my originals as well. Not a word was said.
Technical Test Questions My test was primarily aero, runway markings and NAVAIDS, and a few engineering questions, all of which were covered well in RST. No weather that I remember. Take all of this with a grain of salt in terms of where to focus. The other guys had completely different tests – not even close.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I really felt OK on the vast majority of the test. As you can imagine, it’s hard to remember specifics at this point, but as others have said, it’s important to get the concepts down vs studying gouge. As an example, I remember one question over and over in RST that deals with sequence of starting a turbine engine – air, ignition, fuel – with a few variations. In my test, the answers were all variations of: starter valve open/closed – RPM – oil pressure – ignition – fuel flow – EGT rise – starter valve open/closed. Selections included different orders of above.
HR Questions I really enjoyed the HR portion. Someone else told me that ahead of time and I thought they were crazy, but it really was kind of fun. I think a lot of this is based on who is interviewing you for sure, but I guess I was lucky and had a good panel. Everyone was friendly, warm, inviting, etc… In terms of flow: 1) They did their introductions; 2) Intro yourself in 5 minutes; 3) Go over app and asked questions about it (know your app); 4) Conflict with subordinate; 5) leadership style; 6) lav full prior to takeoff; 7) lights MELd going into uncontrolled field. A few other TMAAT type questions that I can’t remember now. Only the two WWYD. I had no surprises from the RST HR generator.
Cog Test I thought this was one of the easier things over two days. Take your time, read the instructions, do the practice and remember that most of them you can go back and practice again if you want. Did that a couple of times. There are a few that don’t have practice, so make sure you know when hitting next if you’re practicing or starting for real. The only other think I noted is that some of the tests go VERY quickly. I only had 3-4 mannequin with flag before it abruptly ended and went to the next test. In general, I would say that all of the tests were over more quickly than I expected. Then, there were a couple that seemed to go on for a while.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? About 6 months off an on. I did an in-person seminar (one is enough), two webinars, and a top-off. I also used some buddies at Delta to go over some of the HR scenarios from RST to see what they would do in real life.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. Yes and I would definitely recommend them and do it over again. I, however, did not use all of their recommended techniques. Just make sure you sound like you in the interview.
Any additional information you would like to add. Great experience. Try to relax and enjoy it. I had heard the stories of not being able to sleep the night before. I am not a worrier by nature and have never had a problem sleeping, even with a lot of stress. Sure enough, I didn’t sleep at all the night before due to mind racing. Wish I had advice on how to prevent it, but I didn’t study, go through HR questions, etc… for a couple of days prior to clear my mind – still didn’t help! Drink lots of coffee I guess!
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No
