General Overview of Experience Over all was a very positive experience. Showed up the morning of the interview and it was nice to know most of the faces from meeting up for dinner the night before. We were taken in and briefed on how the day to go and what they expected of us. Capt. Holmes was very cordial and spoke to us honestly and candidly. I was a morning tester, so took the COG, Personality and JKT first. Felt prepared and confident. Took small breaks between each test to give my eyes and brain a rest. Took a lunch break with the whole crew. Came back and had 2 hours until my HR interview, so went with two other interviewees to the Delta Museum. It was a great way to wait our turn. The interview team was running very ahead of schedule, so went back early and waiting our turn. Got got called back for the HR portion and was greeted by a warm and friendly HR group. Details are below, but had a very good experience with them. After the HR portion went back to what was absolutely the hardest part… waiting. From the end of my HR to when we got the word we got the job was at least one hour. The tension was high, especially as the head of pilot hiring would come out and call someone to come with him. Our hearts would sink each time. But the difficulty of those moments were offset when we were offered the CJO.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I suspect an internal email LOR from a good friend/DAL pilot mentor may have been the trigger.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No problems with my logbook. I have a digital logbook and brought a printed copy. They simply handed it back to me when I left my HR interview.
I attended one university for 2 years, then transferred and graduated from my 2nd university. I just assumed that the transcripts from my 2nd university were good enough, but they wanted both. They simply asked that I email or fax a copy. I emailed it to them that evening. They were very accommodating in that regard.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST. It was a great study and practice resource for me. I would add that I feel that the “15 day checklist” took me 20 days to get through. I am very glad I gave myself more than 15 days. If I could do it again, I’d give myself 30 days so that I would have more time to hit weak spots.
Technical Test Questions No surprises. If anything, a bit easier than the practice tests.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? There were a few that were worded a bit tricky. Don’t recall exactly, but take your time and read slowly.
Cog Test Just like everyone says, easier than RST except for the “localizer”.
Cog Math Questions
HR Questions A lot of the expected questions. In addition to those…
-How should a Delta customer be treated?
-You have a lot of volunteering. Which one do you see yourself continuing in the future and why?
-*Asked about job description from non-flying job* How did this job prepare you to be a pilot.
-TMAAT you gave good customer service.
-WWYD Captain and drinking alcohol situation.
-WWYD FA spots pax and suspects human trafficking and you are about to depart from 3rd world country.
-You’re a new FO and your captain is losing patience with you because you’re making mistakes as a newly type-rated pilot. WWYD?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 6 weeks
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast. I feel it did. It was worth the money for me. I felt as though I came away being well practiced, but not responding with canned answers. If you are trying to prepare canned answers for as many questions as you can think of, you’re doing it wrong. They’re trying to teach you how to think right and answer appropriately, not what to say.
Any additional information you would like to add. Don’t believe the silly rumors. Go in with confidence, be yourself, drink the water and take off your coat. I kept mine on because I wanted to, not because I thought it would get me the job.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Started the 15 day checklist 30 days out.
