General Overview of Experience Great company to interview with. They put you at ease and seem to be recruiting pilots. They realize that many are getting multiple offers and they sell United while interviewing you to see if you are a good fit. Overall, it was a great experience.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I attended the Veteran’s job fair in SFO. I think this helped me get the interview. They e-mailed to start the process in line with my available date in the system after the job fair.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 3 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? I studied the pilot applicant packet they send and had it down verbatim for the interview. I also downloaded Jeppesen flight deck pro to become familiar with the use of it. I built acronyms for the briefings that you need to give during the assessment. I did a Flight Attendant Brief, Captains Brief, Pilot Flying Brief, Approach Brief, and had one for emergencies. I also reviewed TAF codes and NOTAM acronyms. If you have all these down, the technical assessment will go well.
Technical Test Questions Flight from DEN to PHX with a divert. I chose to divert to TUS. You use the actual weather and NOTAMs for the day, so be prepared to read a TAF and NOTAMs. I think the Captain giving the assessment sped up the process once he saw I was prepared and could read a chart, brief, and make decisions. He asked me about holding and holding airspeeds and altitudes. The CRM video was a landing where the Captain was fast and ignoring the F.O.s inputs. It was straight forward.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? For me it was the QRH. Since it was a brand new checklist and cockpit to me, it took some fumbling to find the emergency in the QRH. The Captain had cockpit cutouts and pointed out the lights we had after the TV screen showed the overall emergency. It was an equipment door light. He helped me locate the correct checklist and then I ran it, talked to dispatch, maintenance, and the F.O. It was straight forward.
Cog Test N/A
Cog Math Questions Thank goodness there is no public math required at United.
HR Questions Intro & resume review, TMAAT questions, Why United? TMAAT: You worked in a diverse environment, you made a decision in the air that you later regretted, you made an unpopular decision and how you delt with it. Overall, I think I talked long on all of them trying to hit the points I wanted to hit in the interview, so there was only 3 of these.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 1 year. This was only because I moved my available date back 7 months.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast. It helped immensely.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
