General Overview of Experience Overall it was as advertised. Try to relax, they try to remind you that the interviewers just want to get to know you. So don’t try to decipher exactly what the secret formula for success is, (or the Delta Davinci Code as Capt. Holmes put it…) just do your best, and be positive. I had no surprises and I didn’t go crazy reading trip reports beforehand. (For what it’s worth, I went red tie, left the jacket on, and drank 2 of the waters!)
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal Rec
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No issues. Tried to organize the paperwork exactly as they asked. Didn’t get fancy, just put the docs in 2 different manila envelopes and pulled them out when I arrived. Read the instructions carefully. They never mentioned my logbooks to me, just handed them back after the HR.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Mainly RST, ‘mental math for pilots’ book, ‘everything explained for the professional pilot’ book.
Technical Test Questions RST prepared me pretty well. The first thing that the test said was “assume on all questions that this is a twin engine jet with wing mounted engines unless otherwise noted” So I wouldn’t pull your hair out trying to memorize the power/thrust/L/Dmax stuff for props.
My test sounded a little easier than some of the other applicants. Only about 3-4 math questions.
Cant remember most, a few that come to mind:
-what happens to thrust as a jet accelerates down the runway? Decreases/constant/increases
-glideslope service volume
-PAPI service volume
-Runway edge lights do what near the end of the runway?
-Forgot to switch to tower and you are on short final. See a green light gun signal, land or go around?
-They don’t give you a LAHSO clearance, but the LAHSO lights come on as u approach intersection, what do you do?
-Most likely time for compressor stall: cruise/when opening thrust reversers/takeoff with crosswind/something else
-Math q’s were easier than RST ones for me. Basic descent and fuel (how long can you hold?)
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Just a few that had vague answers where it was difficult to figure out which was “more right”.
Cog Test I thought it went well. If the video on the technique is still available, it helps a lot.
Cog Math Questions Only made it through a few. Don’t remember.
HR Questions -What if you were feeling tired and it was time to fly?
-TMAAT a superior asked you to do something you weren’t comfortable with.
-Do you think it’s your job to teach FOs as a capt?
-What do you do for fun?
-WWYD pax isn’t comfortable sitting near a muslim passenger.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 1-1.5 months
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast, 2 webinars and a top off. I thought it helped a lot getting your thoughts organized. Hearing other people’s stories lets you listen like an interviewer, and fine tune your technique.
Any additional information you would like to add. Just speculation, but the HR portion seems to be the most important.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? No
