General Overview of Experience Dropped off required docs (no staples, paper clips, tabs allowed). Then intro by Capt Holmes. They are watching how you interact with everyone from Dorthia (secretary) to the psychologist to your fellow interviewees. Went to the HR interview first, then testing in the afternoon (COG first, then mini-psych, then JKT). All the Delta personnel were awesome and nice. Overall it was stressful but the people were welcoming. Once everyone was done for the day, everyone came out to congratulate us on getting the CJO. On day 2, we had the long version of the psych test (500+ questions) and then the interview with the psychologist. Pee test and fingerprinting after that and we were done early on the second day (~10:00 AM). They mentioned that INDOC training for us (interview in mid-April) would probably be in Sept.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Delta ATP-CTP app review.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 7 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No. I used my Air Force Flight Records and my tiny black log book from high school flying cessnas.
Technical Test Questions Probably 50 of the 60 questions were very close to RST study questions. One question about problems with INS systems (answers were gyroscopic precession, gyroscopic reduction (or something like that), and a couple others; I chose gyroscopic precession). One question about fuel system feeding out with cross feeds open and all fuel pumps on, which tanks feed first (The answers were: the one with the higher pressure pumps, they feed evenly, they feed proportionally to the pressure of the different pumps; I chose they feed evenly). One about following a heavy aircraft, your at 5 miles to touchdown when he lands and there is a 6kt crosswind (I answered that the upwind vortex would remain over the runway).
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? The hardest question for me was about the air cycle machine. The question was: The air cycle machine produces what: a) hot air only b) cold air only c) hot and cold air in reference to ISA d) hot and cold air in reference to FTT. I wasn’t sure of the answer (I put C and one of the other guys in the group put D).
HR Questions Tell me about yourself from high school on. Why are you right for Delta? Then they pulled a bullet from my OPR in 2004 about an EP where I had “saved a 50 million dollar aircraft” and asked me to tell them about that situation. The HR guy asked me about my volunteering with the Boy Scouts. Then how are you going to handle being away from your family during the holidays? Another one was, I see that some of your family lives in NC, wouldn’t American be a better fit for you? Then TMAAT you were going to fly but then decided not to. Then, are you applying to any other airlines? And finally, they said a lady in the back is worried about her dog and she sees it on the ramp. What would you do? I said I would check with the ramp folks and make sure the dog was good to go. Then followed up with the lady. Then before takeoff, the cargo heat is out. I said I’d try to get maintenance to fix it. Then if its not fixable, make sure the dog is taken off the aircraft and apologize to the passenger and make sure they get rebooked/special attention.
Cog Test You need to watch the 50 min video from Tito on how the COG practice works. That is vital. Also, the ball on the seesaw thing was a little different. The Delta test said to keep the ball as close to the center as possible and there were no red lines on the edges.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 1 year
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? I used a prep service on Randolph AFB. But I talked a bunch with my friends using Emerald Coast.
Any additional information you would like to add. During the interview, a phone range for about 1 min straight. I think they were messing with me! I got “don’t worry about that, just keep telling your story”. Stay cool and carry on.
Additionally, Facebook was great. We met up with a group that interviewed the day prior for dinner. One of the guys in that group said he did not stand up when the secretary handed him some paperwork. No big deal right? Well that came up later in his interview when one of the interviewers asked him why he disrespected the secretary, ouch. Treat everyone well, of course.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I would have watched the 50 min COG video earlier. I waited till late and that wasn’t smart.
