General Overview of Experience From start to finish it was a wonderful experience. Plenty of emails and correspondence from FDX prior to interview. A few days before my interview, someone called me to make sure I had all the paperwork in order and confirm what was needed on each day of interview.
Once I was there they were extremely friendly and made everyone feel comfortable and welcome. Drug test was done on day one and is completed at the AOTC. They bring in a nurse from the clinic to do drug test on site. Computer test was day one and consisted of three exams. Cog was first, Personality Inventory second (timed: 50 min to complete 240 questions) and pilot knowledge was last (timed: 60 min, 60 questions). Phone call after I completed exam and was asked to come to second day. 15 people in our group and everyone passed day 1 tests.
Second day is SBI and Panel interview. Briefing in the morning to get you comfortable with what was to come and introduction to everyone involved. Again, everyone was so nice and you could tell they wanted to hire all of us, it was up to you to not make it through.
SBI was straight forward. No tricks or gotcha’s. Assess and make a decision. Use CRM. Can’t stress this enough.
Panel was with two pilots, one Captain and one F/O. Very relaxed. NO HR personal anymore. They just want to get to know you and see if they could fly with you for 10 days straight… They asked some general questions, nothing crazy, a couple TMAT questions. It was as if I was telling stories to a couple of friends. Lots of laughing and smiles. Just be yourself and have fun. Don’t go in there with a bunch of canned responses. This is a turn off. They will tell you this straight away.
You’re probably going to be nervous. Try to relax and just enjoy the ride. It’s tough but if you get the invite then your a rockstar and they want you on property.
They feed you on the second day. Great Memphis BBQ.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I visited them at 3 conferences. Only one that I know of they actually logged my visit.
I had a sponsor or PE. I would recommend finding someone to do this for you. I get the feeling it really helps but some of the people in my interview group didn’t have one.
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 3 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? They said my logbooks were one of the nicest they had ever seen. I tabbed all my check rides and created a table of contents for all my check rides. I used Pro-Soft Binders to print my digital logbook and had it bound in a leather binder. Great company to use.
No application problems.
Only paperwork issue was on them. They will ask you to bring a ton of original docs and copies of all kinds of things. I brought everything they asked for. On day one of computer testing they asked our group to turn in certain things, one of which was a copy of PRIA docs. This was not planned, so none of us had copies of PRIA docs. Only originals for day two. So all of us had to make copies on our own time after computer testing was completed. Then on day two we were told that those copies were not needed. No big deal. Small miscommunication and the only thing that didn’t go perfectly. My advice is to bring originals AND copies of everything, just in case.
Technical Test Questions None. All questions were scenario based or questions to get to know you.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? No technical questions.
HR Questions This is not word for word…. How would you handle working with a very senior captain that wasn’t pulling his or her own weight? Like not doing walk around or pre-flight tasks?
What are some of your hobbies?
What do you know about our Company and how will you adjust to night flying? Have you ever done red-eyes or standups?
You will be asked a bunch of legal questions that they are required to ask. Any accidents? Incidents? FAA violations? DUI’s? About 10 of these? Yes or No and they check boxes and move on. Very relaxed environment…
Cog Test Use RST and you will be fine. Be sure to watch Tito’s videos on how to take exam. This will really help. Stay calm and make sure to finish all exams in time given. The personality inventory is 240 questions and you have 50 min. There is no timer, so set a time on your watch. The knowledge test is 60 min and 60 questions. There is a timer on the computer for this one. One guy didn’t finish the Personality exam but he made it through day one… I overheard him tell test proctor that he had a few questions to go when time ran out. If something goes wrong with computer, stay calm and don’t get frustrated. They are there to help every step of the way.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I interviewed with another company a few months before, so this step was already covered.
