General Overview of Experience Military: KC-135 (3,000+ hrs), Gulfstream (700+ hrs)
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? 2021 WAI Virtual Conference
How many internal recs did you have? 1-2
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 1 week
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? I miscalculated my PIC time, about 200 hours less than I first reported but still above minimums. During my resume review, I immediately addressed the issue and reported my new, accurate totals.
Technical Test Questions They displayed a Jeppesen approach and asked me to give an approach briefing. Lots of instrument flying questions, holding procedures, some oceanic procedures. At one point the pilot interview asked me to explain my instrument cross-check to the HR interview. How do you use ORM? What is CRM? Hypotheticals: Captain descends at 1000 fpm on ILS, lose an engine at V1.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? There was no test, but I got a couple of questions that were unusual. When you’re turning to a specific heading, how do you know when to start your rollout? When you’re taking off, how quickly do you raise the nose to the climb attitude (for my plane, it’s 2-3 degrees per second), and how do you verify you’re doing that?
HR Questions Why UPS? What did you learn about UPS while preparing for this interview? Who recommended you? TMAAT you had to think outside the box, TMAAT you had an emergency, TMAAT you handled a conflict. Your most challenging job? Your most rewarding job? What makes a good leader? Have you ever canceled for fatigue? What is your preferred base and aircraft? Are you applying for other jobs? If so, where is UPS on your list?
Cog Test I bought the RST Hogan Prep
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? More than a year (thanks to COVID), but got serious after attending the WAI conference
How did you prep?
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? RST one on one coaching student! The process is eye opening to say the least. Worth the investment! I needed the one on one prep vs webinar experience.
Any additional information you would like to add. Overall the interviewers were very friendly and professional. They scheduled a 90-minute zoom meeting and they used every minute of it. I saw two interviewers but several others are dialed in and watching you but you can’t see them. The two interview wasn’t simply a block of HR followed by a block of technical…they bounced back and forth several times.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Study the fundamentals of instrument flying.
