General Overview of Experience As advertised by Tito at Ready Set Takeoff. It was structured with an introduction, HR portion (TMAAT’s) 15 minute bathroom break followed by a very rudimentary technical portion that follows the interview packet information.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? This is only speculation, I have had an application open for nearly ten years with United and I happen to send a PDF of my application and my resume to recruiting@united.com (the flight attendant recruiting contact) and I happen to receive a pilot interview email four days later. Try it out!
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. They want all docs consolidated in one PDF sent to them prior to the interview. I put on my electronic logbook in a collated book I made at the FedEx store.
Technical Test Questions They said “we are sitting on the gate here in Denver, you are Captain, tell me how you would start this trip with the first officer?” I memorized the 13 briefing items in the interview packet-“Are there any threats you want to address?” This is our expected fuel burn for this leg with 45 minutes of alternate fuel and 15 minutes contingency fuel. Next MEL’s…interviewer interjected-Stop! That’s enough.

She pointed to the DEN 10-9, we are at a gate, (She didn’t specify which one but I assumed one of the United B gates) what’s are planned taxi to 34L? I pointed to the DEN 10-9 inset, “We can expect to request push with ramp tower, expect taxi green line westbound to 4W southbound G to WA. She interjected on the taxi out ground says the last departure reported windshear. I told her I would request to stop taxi with ground control in order to revise performance numbers for a no flex TOGA takeoff. I would ask what altitude windshear occurred and if they had information on weather on departure to preplan radar vectors around it. Call the flight attendants and tell them to get ready for Mr Toad’s wild ride on climb out, it’s going to be bumpy. Interviewer then asked “what is your procedure for encountering windshear on departure?” I said do not change configuration of the aircraft, put thrust from climb detent to TOGA, have the non-flying pilot call out rate of decent or rate of climb while flying pilot remains vigilant to keep the aircraft pitched into the flight director.

She then showed me the EMMYS RNAV departure for Denver. “What is the top altitude of this departure?” In the bottom right it says TOP ALTITUDE 230. “If on departure you received a climb via clearance except maintain 11,000 and they told you turn left 280° what would you do? Turn left 280° and confirm with departure you are still climbing to 11,000.

We looked at the FLATI arrival. “What is the bottom altitude if you are landing 35L? Just look at the chart. It tells you!

We looked at 11-9 chart ILS 34L. “Where is the final approach fix for this approach?” “If the glide slope is out of service, what would your rate of decent be to the runway?” I pointed to the bottom left of the profile view and stated, on a cat D aircraft (140kts) it states on the chart 743 FPM.

She then stated here at United we have a culture that embraces threat error management. From the information in the packet we gave you, what are two of the most important aspects of threat error management in your opinion? (Memorize these 7 items and have a good story about two of them.) I talked about “leadership effectiveness” and “communication” as being the most important in my opinion.

She then asked “Why United?” This concluded the interview with a couple smiles and hand shakes.

HR Questions TMATT
A captain didn’t like a policy you implemented
Someone criticized your performance
You went out of your way to help someone when didn’t need to
You regretted your performance and how did you overcome it
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Approximately one month
How did you prep? Two of Tito’s weekly group sessions on Wednesday and three, one hour one-on-one sessions with Tito. (Those we’re absolutely worth it.)
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Ready Set Take Off exclusively.
Any additional information you would like to add. HR portion is by far the most challenging portion of this interview. They have approximately ten questions they will give you and you will get blindsided with something you haven’t heard before. Tito’s technique of pre-framing and using a toolkit of multiple stories you can incorporate into multiple TMAAT questions helped me the most.
