Which Airline did you interview with? United Airlines
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? 2 weeks availability. Invite 17 Feb, interview 18 Apr, CJO 26 Apr (the following Wednesday). Expect training in Fall
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time Greater
Total Turbine PIC Time >2,000
General Overview of Experience Spot on with everybody else’s- very friendly all around.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? It seems like a substantial number of recent interviewees attended the in house event in San Francisco last fall.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? Kind of, although it wasn’t really a problem during the interview. The first thing they have you do is review your application which they print and provide to you. Somehow my total turbine time on their copy reflected over 14K hours, and I have no idea where that came from, so I red inked that. It never came up in the interview but I’m still glad I caught it. For what it’s worth, I printed my own copy and brought it along for this review and it reflected what I had always stated (~8500)
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Most everyone by now is aware that the United version of this is a table top review of a mission. All of the scenarios are so similar that I wouldn’t get hung up on my particular story. Just know the call outs cold; they provide you with a study guide with everything you need to know.
Technical Test Questions Through the course of the table top he asked me a handful of general knowledge questions regarding things like the departure. Specifically, he wanted to know what the top altitude on the jeppesen plate was. He also asked holding speeds.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A. I will add that they play a short CRM video that you discuss. Make sure to pay close attention to everything that goes on in the video. Mine was a night visual approach into Reno where they get a GPWS warning during descent. The Captain chose to level off which I debriefed as a loss of SA and bad technique to recover (should have immediately climbed).

The biggie: I had to answer a question about a commander directed downgrade in 2015. Everyone’s advice that I will restate here is OWN IT and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, which I did. After the mea culpa he asked me several more times for the specific reason that I was downgraded. At this point all I had left was my honest impression about this situation which happened to be that the OG Commander was not sufficiently familiar with the regulation. I was nervous about this answer for the following week while I was waiting for the call. Bottom line is if they keep pressing about some skeleton in your closet be very clear about how you accept responsibility for a mistake and stick to it.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I’ve been following these forums for about a year now and I think they’re essential for framing your approach. I had exactly two months from the invite to the interview and really got into it then.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? DeeDee Onder-Brown with Cage Consulting. She did great.
Any additional information you would like to add. On the advice of Cage, I brought along a ridiculous amount of supporting documents- and left them all with the secretaries when I interviewed. The only thing they want you to bring in with you is recommendation letters. On the downgrade issue I mentioned, I was very glad to have a recommendation from my DO (he even mentioned how the downgrade was no biggie).
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I’ve been flying for about 25 years, but I was nervous about being able to come up with stories for every possible scenario. I recommend finding as many different TMAATs as possible and then practice fitting your stories to them. Ultimately your interview is about how you present yourself, so preparation can not be overemphasized.
