General Overview of Experience Stressful, no doubt. There’s no way around the tension and stress, but the staff genuinely wants you to succeed and they are very welcoming and professional. Barry Holmes does a great job breaking the ice in the beginning. Our group of applicants seemed to gel pretty well and make small talk to try and relax. The HR portion to me was a lot more chill than what I was expecting and had heard in previous ride reports. The panel was professional and direct but made me feel at ease. Really it was just pilots talking about pilot stuff. 45 minutes flew by and I truly believe they’re just trying to get to know you and decide if they want to spend a 4-day trip with you or not! Just be yourself, make eye contact, & be confident!
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? <60 days
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Got a couple internal recs, and I did the Delta ATP-CTP Course. I think it helped get the application scored.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST for the JKT, COG trainer was down the entire time during RST, but I used the alternate resources provided. PEBL2 was a great alternate.
Technical Test Questions Heavy on Aero, one or two math, a few engine, 2-3 Electrical questions (what do inverters do? What does a transformer rectifier do?) Zero weather questions.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? The JKT questions seemed to very much more conceptual than rote memorization, and some of the answers are worded similarly, so you have to read each answer carefully. On the ones I didn’t know, I was able to narrow down the answers to two, and make an educated guess. Overall it was the toughest part of the process, and I walked out thinking I didn’t do very well. Finished 60 questions with 5 minutes to spare. RST does a good job getting you the concepts, but none of the questions seemed exactly like the flashcards. That being said, without the RST 15-day checklist I would have failed the test wholesale.
Cog Test A lot easier than I expected. PEBL2 was great prep as an alternate resource.
Cog Math Questions 2-3 math questions. Reverse percentage, Adding up the cost of pears and apples. Nothing cosmic.
HR Questions Take 3 minutes and tell us how you got from high school to here. Tell me about this checkride failure, Tell me about your first job (grocery store), tell me about your education (ATP-CTP), Did you do any HR prep for this interview? WWYD 1- T-storm off the nose, 150NM, tops at FL390 and the Captain wants to go through it. Several follow-up questions….What are your other considerations? – I said turbulence, fasten seat belts, discontinue service, PA announcement) WWYD 2 – You’re a new hire and the Captain is frustrated with how slow you are performing your checks. How do you address this?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 2 Months
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Aero Crew Solutions in Atlanta. Did a mock interview with a retired chief pilot. I also talked to a lot of buddies at Delta and they gave me a list of questions from their interviews. Also read through the RST HR questions. All had very similar content and I felt ready for the HR.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Not really. RST got me there…thank you!
