General Overview of Experience The Delta hiring team was all very professional and organized. The Delta hiring team is empathetic to your stress and encouraging to the applicants, thank goodness. Their job is certainly difficult. If you are like me and get annoyed reading life advice in a trip report, skip the rest of this section. Alright, context, this is the opinion of one applicant who was fortunate enough to get the CJO. I ran into a friend the night before who told me to “enjoy” the interview. It’s a good thought, but impossible (at least for me). There was entirely too much pressure to enjoy. Also, friends/family reading this, it doesn’t help when you tell the applicant that they will absolutely/certainly get the job, since it adds to the stress. If you are the heavily favored team, and lose, it hurts even more. It’s better to say something along the lines of, “you’ll be fine whether or not you get the job, hopefully it’ll work out with Delta, but their process isn’t 100%, you’ll get a job somewhere”. I recommend doing whatever you can to manage your stress level. Despite my previous comment, I did end up using some of the “life advice” from previous. I went out a day early (2 days prior), didn’t drink any caffeine the day prior, worked out twice, and was able to sleep 6hrs the night before (8hrs, yeah right). You’ve heard it before, but going out to dinner with the other interviewees in similar circumstances was very therapeutic. Life advice complete (consider yourself lucky…I left out a section about being qualified just to get the invite, blah, blah).
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Internal email to Delta Pilot hiring team. When I first asked for recommendations, I had to submit LORs into airline apps. Immediately after, they sent the email recommendations (easy cut and paste), but this was BEFORE my application was published (I wanted it tight before I published). I didn’t hear anything for 5 months, so I had some other people I flew with send the internal emails. I got the invite about 6 weeks later. Lesson: wait until after your application is live and published before you get the internal emails.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 7 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No issues.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? RST: Ground School, 15 day, Tests, Quizzes, and Notecards (my own and RSTs).
Technical Test Questions I know this is obvious, but the answers listed in the ride reports are the best guess of the test taker, not necessarily correct (I’ve read some incorrect answers – my answers are in parentheses). There was a Ram Air Turbine (RAT) question that I didn’t know, another about GPS precision RNP of 4.0 with an ANP of 0.4 (are you good to go, yes). Both of those two I didn’t see in RST. Minimum VVI when within 1000ft of level off altitude (500 fpm), crosswind controls (aileron into wind, rudder opposite), left Slot/Slat doesn’t deploy, what happens (roll left, yaw right). What is the worst wind for wake turbulence (light tail quartering)?
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? See previous.
Cog Test I thought it was easy, but used RST to practice, even though it was 4 months ago. I’m sure I read this in previous reports, but after practicing and you press “Next”, it’s game time. Since the instructions are paced different, click next, read a bit, click next again, read. After the last next, you’ll start the exercise immediately. Have your stylus ready. For the sequencing (1,2,3/A,B,C/1-A-2-B), the test said that distance to center of the box was scored, so how close you clicked to the “2” was important. Also, I was surprised that I only had about 6 flag guys, lasted under 10 seconds.
Cog Math Questions 3 out of 4 were reverse percentages, I meant to practice more of these, but didn’t. Practice these, you can divide the “answer” by the percentage. 12 is 80% of what? 12/.8 = 15 or 120/8 = 15.
HR Questions Some small talk that I awkwardly answered. Tell me about yourself in under 2 minutes; tell me about a recommendation (memorize one of these, they all seem to blend together). Here’s an inconsistency on your application, explain how you messed up (don’t get defensive). Sign your application. Transcript question about an achievement that I didn’t notice beforehand, so I had to tap dance (would have been easier to sell myself if I had noticed it beforehand). What prep services did you use? Question about one of my references who works for a different airline, what would they think about me being at Delta? TMAAT Conflict with a co-worker that required leadership. TMA a person who you’ve flown with who you admire? WWYD if there’s a bomb on board that you get from ACARS, what would you say over the PA, what if the bomb was located and deemed movable, would you ask a FA to move it?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 8 months every now and then, 2 weeks of more intense study/thought.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. Definitely helped and worthwhile, but the TMAATs were more pointed than I was used to (focused on an assignment or time, so couldn’t use the story that I wanted). The WWYD practice helped with a methodology and thinking, but the WWYD’s in the interview was very conversational. I wasn’t pleased with my HR performance, but I believe the interview team was friendly and encouraging. They did a great job of knocking me off my gameplan. I second guessed all my answers, certainly didn’t knock it out of the park, but was fortunate enough to get the CJO.
Any additional information you would like to add.
