Which Airline did you interview with? American
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? Video interview on Monday/More info Monday Afternoon/Interview scheduled Friday
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? CJO received
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time 2,000-3,000
Total Turbine PIC Time >2,000
General Overview of Experience The gouge provided on RST and ECIC is spot on. American is really ramping up hiring and the whole experience was top notch. I’ve interviewed at FedEx, Southwest, and American…and this was the best experience overall. Small things like paying for the hotel, having all of our paperwork done for us, and the interview setup next to the DC-3 made for a great experience.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No. They are focusing heavily on military pilots right now for their off the street hires. Of our group of 16 I believe all of us were current/former military of some sorts.
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 3 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No issues. I had my Flying History Report and my entire HARM Flight records copied. Don’t waste time putting it in some super fancy binder with tabs etc. Make copies, place it in a blue binder with exactly what I did and you will be golden. Then spent ZERO time fussing about my paperwork and you really don’t get “bonus points” for spending hours presenting it nicely. Also, bring EXACTLY what they ask for…nothing more…nothing less. They want the paperwork they asked for and nothing else. They collect it from you and put it in their plastic envelopes so once again, don’t waste hours making fancy binders etc.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Read the gouge and be ready to sell yourself. The technical questions are really softball questions if you have read over the available material. They want you to verbalize your work so they can follow along on your decision process. Use CRM and don’t forget the FA’s, Dispatch, and to update the passengers at a logical point.
Technical Test Questions I won’t regurgitate word for word as it’s been written out many times before. But my questions were:
1-Tell me about yourself
2-TMAAT you had to influence someone outside your chain of command
3-TMAAT you had to fly with someone you didn’t like
4-TMA your best and worst flight briefs and what made them good/bad
5-Taking off into the thunderstorm
6-Captain passes out mid flight
7-Overhear crew talking bad about a passenger and the passengers are looking at you
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? If you study the gouge it’s super easy. Read the previous trip reports and get a feel for the questions being asked. The interviewers have a binder and they pre-select questions to ask you. Perhaps they reference your Resume to choose or perhaps they just choose ones they like….it’s all black magic to me, but ultimately it’s very “script” driven.
Cog Test Stay focused and grind your way through it. Don’t even attempt to study for this. Get some rest the night before, have a good attitude, and just know that it’s going to be over in 3.5 hours. One of the interviewers said that their “psychologists” have determined that there is a high correlation between your results on the test and your ability to make it through training.
Cog Math Questions
HR Questions My HR lady was not the poker faced person that others had so it’s luck of the draw I guess. Discussed availability and some other application information. Then she asked TMAAT I had to make a decision that I knew was bad but I had no option. We chatted about American and the excitement associated with the hiring etc and that was it. About 15 minutes total with her.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 2 weeks
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC. The phone top offs are awesome to get you laser focused for the interview. Well worth every penny.
Any additional information you would like to add. They really just want you to be relaxed and sell yourself. Overwhelmingly high pass rates once you make it to the interview.
You will most likely be staying at the same hotel as all of your interviewers–exhibit high SA!! Don’t let something you do at the hotel affect your job. You are at the interview the moment you get to the airport till you get to your car in two days.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
