Which Airline did you interview with? SWA
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability? 3 Weeks
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time 5,000-8,000
Total Turbine PIC Time >2,000
General Overview of Experience The interview experience was incredibly relaxed. They do their best to put you at ease. The first 2 hours are getting your paperwork turned in, doing finger prints, hanging out with your fellow interviewees, and listening to a “where we are and this is where we are going” talk given by their chief of hiring. The whole time you are there, they use the word “we” or phrases like “when you get here” to make you feel relaxed. At least that’s how I felt.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 6-12 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? No job fair or anything else I would consider a trigger. I did have an app review close to the time I received the initial invite. For those wondering if an app review is worth it, I would say yes. I used checkedandset….incredibly thorough and detailed. I thought it was money well spent despite having my apps reviewed by friends and guys who have been hired on at numerous carriers.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 3 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? I did not have issues with logbooks or paperwork. I did transfer my Air Force records to an Excel spreadsheet, brought all my HARM records, FEF, flight time summary, and my Navy log books. I tabbed out where I made Aircraft Commander, IP, EP, etc. They are very interested in how I derived my PIC time. They are also very interested in me being able to show my work. I came in with my 1 yr, 2 yr, 3, yr and 5 yr look-back available and PIC, IP/EP, total times broken out per aircraft. They wanted a number I did not have prepared, but I was able to get a rough number based on my spreadsheets. I think they do this to throw you off your game and see how you adapt. Just stay positive and try to answer as best as you can. I did not have my flight times exact between my AF official records and my own calculations, but they were within 4 to 5 hours from each other. I did not do a .3 conversion.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? NA….but do study up on the history of SWA, how it started, domiciles, numbers of aircraft, etc.
Technical Test Questions NA
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? NA. But SWA does want to know why you want to be there. I was asked why in all three phases of the interview. For me it is the culture (talked to lots of friends there), stability (never furloughed), and SWA is my wife’s favorite airline (and everyone else that I know) to fly.
Cog Test NA
Cog Math Questions NA
HR Questions HR was a mix of TMAT questions and questions based off of my resume. They had a copy with them (I brought an updated copy to give them) and they referenced it quite a bit, wrote on it a bit, and the HR person took copious notes on her computer. Tell us about yourself (quick overview of career). TMAT you had a disagreement in flight. Why do you have a sUAS certificate? How are you going to deal with a CA who is younger than you? What will be the hardest thing when beginning at SWA? Why SWA? What do you have to ask us? I cannot tell you how relaxed this portion seemed. It was almost to the point where you my be lulled into breaking your interview demeanor. I think they are interested in the answers to your questions, but they also are seeing if you are someone they could take a trip/work with.
The LOI was as most gouge states. You are given a scenario then you go live. My problem had no sure solution. I passed controls, gathered information, stated the problem, looked my crew members in the eye as I was working through the problem/getting information, asked their opinions as to handle the problem, I stated my solution, took inputs on my solution, they didn’t budge from their proposals, then took control back and executed the plan. My solution was different from my FO and different from the JS. We landed safely. At the end they leave and give you time to critique yourself. I had a few good points for myself, but 3x as many “I should have done this” points. They don’t give you feedback so its kind of strange since we are all trained to accept scathing criticism. They asked “why SWA”? Lastly they wanted to know my background, so I went into a quick career overview….maybe 1 minute long.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I specifically prepped for this interview about 3 weeks out. But I joined Emerald Coast over 3 years ago knowing retirement was coming. The time to start is NOW.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast. YES. I cannot recommend them enough.
Any additional information you would like to add. Be egalitarian and show it!
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Combed over my logbook and spreadsheet better. I found several errors in the three weeks leading up to the interview.
