General Overview of Experience Overall a fantastic interview experience. I had interviewed at other major legacy airlines and by far American was the most relaxed atmosphere. The pilot recruitment department at American Airlines want you to succeed and they went out of their way to make you feel welcome.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? I had three(3) internal letters of recommendations from current AA Pilots.
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None whatsoever. Not one question was asked about my logbooks or my documents. Just bring everything HR asks for at the time of your interview. All the documents that you give to HR (Start of Day one) goes in a clear plastic folder with your name on it. On day one you leave your logbooks with the HR folks in the pilot recruitment office. Day two at your panel interview your interviewers will give your logbooks back to you. Just have your logbooks neat and organized with no American Airlines logs imprinted anywhere. Copy write infringement.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? There is some gouge out there on the internet but don’t study more than one(1) hour for it.
Technical Test Questions N/A
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A
Cog Test Day One cognitive testing is difficult and there is nothing you can do to really prepare for it. We all got done with day one cognitive testing feeling awful and thinking there is no way American will invite us back for day two panel interviews. The tests are design to make you fail. I have never heard of anyone not getting the CJO from American Airlines based on day one cognitive testing. Just relax and try to have fun with it but don’t spend a lot of energy preparing for day one cognitive testing.
Cog Math Questions As previously stated.
HR Questions Day two panel interviews is where you need to shine. You’ll have a panel interview with a Capt and First Officer and a one on one HR interview. I can’t stress enough you really need to shine on day two. The Capt and First Officer TMAAT questions I received were: Tell about a process, procedure or SOP you improved upon. TMAAT you had to council a peer or subordinate. TMAAT you had to step in and stop an action that you thought was unsafe. The two (2) WWYD scenarios I got were. Taking off with a thunderstorm a few miles off the departure end of the runway with wind shear alerts and tower clears you for take-off. Capt becomes ill or incapacitated. Others in my group had different TMAAT and WWYD scenarios. The panel interview with the Capt and First Officer lasted about 50 minutes. The HR one on one interview lasted about 30 minutes. The HR questions I received were: TMMAT you had a conflict with a superior. As a pilot for American Airlines how could you save the company money. I was also asked what is the earliest date I could start and did I have any check ride failures or anything in my background that would raise red flags etc…
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? One(1) month.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? FAPA. They were excellent and most of the folks at FAPA had previously worked at American Airlines.
Any additional information you would like to add. None
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? None
