General Overview of Experience My experience is the same as many others having gone through the interview process here at Delta. The recruiting staff here is professional, courteous and super-friendly. What an amazing core of people running the pilot hiring department.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Just eclipsed 1,000 TPIC (121 jet PIC). Got a couple of internal recs but they’ve been in my airline apps system for at least a year. I also had a 76 CA write a personal letter to hiring telling them about his jumpseat experience when I was his CA a week prior to the interview.
How many internal recs did you have? 5+
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 6 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? None. Be prepared to talk about what you put in on your application and logbooks. This is your time to shine. It’s a reflection of who you are. Know your application stone cold. Understand your strengths and weaknesses. I had a couple check-ride failures and I mean, more than 2. I am nowhere perfect but don’t let that discourage you… Ever! Own the failures. Tell them what you learned from those mistakes and what have you done to prevent them from happening again. Delta, like anyone else, believes in giving 2nd chances. I’m a shining examples of this. I would have thought my failures would have automatically been a no-go. You have to believe in yourself and don’t sell yourself short. Don’t be the guy who forgets to bring university/college transcripts. Just don’t.
Know what you put in your application. The recruiters will go through it with a fine tooth comb and ask specific questions. Delta sends out multiple emails covering all the documents to bring. Just follow that list. Nothing more, nothing less.
Technical Test Questions That 60 question JKT was brutal. No doubt about it. I’m not big into studying and nor am I any good at soaking up concepts that are foreign to me. There were, however, a few guys in my interview group who were much more knowledgeable in certain areas and even they said the JKT was a challenge. I kid you not, that JKT, is not only archaic but also the wording of the questions asked were rather hard to understand.
If you’re unsure about what the question is asking, you can guess which is always an option. With any of the questions, you can most likely narrow it down to 2 choices and then it’s 50/50 from there. By the end of the test, I had about 10 minutes left of the clock remaining so I went back to the ones I wasn’t sure about. I had 20-25 I was not entirely sure on so had to go with my gut and used my best “judgement.”
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? Radials and bearing pointer (NDB) type questions.
HR Questions So here’s my take on this panel interview. You know how everyone says to keep your intro brief and if your interviewers ask you to keep it under a certain time like 2-3 or 4-5 mins? Well guess what, I went over my intro by 2x that and I still got the CJO. I only had 2 WWYD and 2 TMAAT questions in the panel. Probably because of my rather lengthy intro/bio.
Just be yourself. If it takes you a good solid 8 minutes to tell them WHO YOU ARE then so be it. Leaves the interviewers less time to ask you scenario/behavioral-based questions. It worked for me and I’m certain it has worked for others. They don’t have a timer. If your life story is as good as mine. Tell it and be proud. Don’t truncate it so you can satisfy the time requirements.
WWYD:
On a flight to international airport. Said airport is shutdown due to catastrophic earthquake. You’re the CA, tell me how you would handle that situation?
A female passenger is yelling at your FA because she said the FA pushed her. Your FA says otherwise.
TMAAT:
Tell me about a time you had to break a rule/procedure?
Tell me about a time you had to be counseled?
Cog Test Set of brain games. All I can say here is, if you’re normally good at gaming. You should have no problems with this section at all. Try training your brain by doing memory games and numbers and sequential patterns to get your brain to think about speed.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? 2 weeks.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC helped me tremendously. I did 1 webinar and 2 Top Offs.
Any additional information you would like to add. During the HR panel, be yourself. Be genuine. Be honest.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I would have prepped a little more in advance with the ECIC.
