General Overview of Experience First off, everyone who said to just relax for this interview was right. This was my first airline interview and they made me feel completely relaxed. The HR staff is great and can help you out with whatever you need. The interview is done in their museum underneath one of their original DC-3s. This is not an interrogation room style event. They were very excited to have us there and they really want you to be a part of the company. Have your basic structure of how you answer questions, have your general stories and read the trip reports. You’ll be fine.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 1-6 months
Did you attend a job fair? No
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Not that I know of.
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 2 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? I made a spreadsheet with a summary of my flying history report numbers and gave them my entire HARM folder, no civ/elec logbooks. I just used the exact numbers from my FHR (PIC, SIC, IP, etc., No conversions or percentages of PIC) No issues/no questions asked.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? Basically get a good night’s rest and power through!
Technical Test Questions N/A
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A
Cog Test N/A
Cog Math Questions The hardest section for me was the math. If I could do it over I would just skip the question after 3 min or so if I couldn’t figure it out. I got bogged down trying to figure out the answers.
HR Questions Pilot Interview Questions:
Started out with just general chit chat, getting to know you. Very easy going. Didn’t do any sort of 5 min canned speech on who I was. They talked about their background. They explained how they wanted the questions answered and give you a piece of paper with general hints for notes as you answer the questions.
-Tell us about your duties as Chief Pilot
-Was there a policy change or process you did not like in the past year that you had to deal with or implement?
-Tell us how you incorporate safety into the workplace and into your personal habit patterns.
-You are at a social gathering and a AA Emperor member approaches you and complains about how his last flight was delayed. He knows you are an AA pilot. What should you do?
-TMAAT you had to fly with someone you didn’t like. How did you approach the situation?
-TMAAT you had to make a difficult decision concerning a co-worker.
-Scenario #1
You are #1 waiting to T/O on rwy 270 after an hour and a half delay for wx. The aircraft ahead of you had to execute an immediate left turn to 190 to avoid a TS. You hear an aircraft on approach to Rwy 33 report a gain of 15 knots on final. You are cleared for T/O. You have the aircraft.
-Scenario #2
You are inbound for LGA at FL 350, 530 kts ground. You switch freq to approach and get nothing. Switch to previous freq, nothing. You have the aircraft.HR Interview:
-Talked about his background
-Explain your decision making process for scenario #1 in non-pilot terms
-Discussed my availability and if I had any other interviews
-He asked a few yes or no questions that he had to run through.
-Very easy going and low threat
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I attended an ECIC seminar in 2014. No top off prior. I just had my basic structure of how I answer questions and went over my answers to the standard range of questions in my head. I also went over AA trip reports to get a feel for the type of questio
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Emerald Coast. The initial course was great. It helped me get the basic structure of my answers down. The pilot interviewers and HR reps are very down to earth and make you feel comfortable and relaxed. No pressure.
Any additional information you would like to add.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process?
