Which Airline did you interview with? United
How many days between invite, interview, and listed availability?
Did you receive a job offer? Yes
If you did not receive the CJO why do you think you weren’t chosen to continue in the process? N/A
What is your experience? Military
Total Flight Time 5,000-8,000
Total Turbine PIC Time >2,000
General Overview of Experience Very professional, welcoming and straightforward. From start to finish it was under four hours. Stayed at the Double Tree which was a quick walk across the street.
How long did you have your application in before you received an invite? 12 months +
Did you attend a job fair? Yes
Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? WAI but that was 6 months ago. Possibly just came within their window for pulling my application and my military availability date?
How many internal recs did you have? 3-4
How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 4 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? No. Electronic logbook with excel print outs as well as paper logbook. Had put a lot of time into app and logbooks ahead of time so I believe they showed well.
How did you prepare for the JKT/COG portion of the interview? UA has a Technical Skills Assessment. It replaced the sim ride a year ago. It is essentially a briefing room with a laptop where you will go through a mock flight. They send you a packet to prepare with callouts, profiles for takeoff, approach and missed as well as some very basic limits. You will need some Jepp approach plate familiarity and SID/STARs as well. This link does a great job of breaking down the differences between DoD FLIP approach plates and the Jepps plates. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8q3Y98LiWE
This link is a great summary of Jepps pubs to include chart legends.

For SID/STAR review some folks have used the FAA link: https://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/avs/offices/afs/afs400/afs470/pbn/media/Climb_Descend_Via_FAQ.pdf
But I think this one is much easier to understand, look under the Climb Via Tutorial halfway down the page: https://www.nbaa.org/ops/cns/pbn/climb-via/
Technical Test Questions TSA will start out with you reviewing TAFs/NOTAMs they give you. Then you start out as the CA and do your crew/taxi/takeoff briefs. There is no right answer here or UA way, they just want it to be professional and complete, your company brief will be fine. Then you go through call outs for takeoff. They will ask a few questions about the SID that you will be able to handle after referencing the above links. Then they will give you a minor EP you need to reference via the QRH (they use FD Pro) and this is on the content locker. I was not very familiar with that product and they talked me through it a little. The you do your ABCs for the approach. Expect a few STAR questions, such as if they switch runways what is your new lowest altitude? or if vectored off what are you cleared to? Call outs for approach and they give you a runway closure, MAP callouts and then go through a quick scenario picking a divert. Will have to choose one based on wx, fuel state and UA services. No biggie. That ends and then you wrap up with a CRM video with some crew flaw and have to debrief what you saw and how you would handle it. Very straight forward and low threat as far as the mood.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? N/A
Cog Test N/A
Cog Math Questions N/A
HR Questions Small room. Introductions and then I offered a resume to each of them. There is a pen and paper out which they say you can use (not really that useful in my opinion). They stated all answers should be the STAR method and then asked for my intro with how I got interested in aviation. After that the questions came. On the top of the paper I wrote STAR/SARR to keep on point and then wrote down the question once asked so I did not drift off topic. Know your TMAAT stories.
Tell me about yourself beginning with how you became interested in aviation.
TMAAT you made a decision the team disagreed with and how you got them back on board
Your most stressful flight and how you led the crew.
TMAAT you made a mistake and how you dealt with it.
TMAAT you mentored a junior pilot.
TMAAT you had a conflict with a crew member.
Why United?
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? Had been thinking about this stuff for 6 months or so but not really game on until 4 weeks out.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? Centerline. They were great in the 1 on 1 session. I hear great things about others as well, just was referenced here and started. Key concept is to get feedback and talk with others who have knowledge and experience.
Any additional information you would like to add. Great process and very professional. RST UA can become the product RST Delta is if folks work together to bring it up.
Is their anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? Time is always precious so be as prepared with documentation and start thinking about stories.
