General Overview of Experience Very professionally handled. Listen to Capt Holmes when he tells you what Delta is looking for. They look heavily at your education and GPA in those programs. (If you don’t have a Master’s Degree go get one and make sure you get great grades.) They look heavily at the leadership positions you have held. Be ready to talk about those things when they review your app. You really need to relax and show them you have personality. Don’t step into the HR Board nervous– it will show if you aren’t confident in your answers. People that lost their cool got the boot. Don’t give canned Emerald Coast answers. They seemed to hurry you along if they felt like you were reciting canned answers. You need to read the feedback you are getting from the HR Board and adapt accordingly. That shows true intelligence. Take the ECIC concepts and apply them to your stories and TMAAT questions, but be genuine about what you say. I had fun and laughed a few times. They don’t want robots that feel uncomfortable talking about themselves. Be prepared to sit at a very small table and be up close and personal with the HR Board.

Did you do anything special that triggered the interview invitation? Attended Delta CTP program in conjunction with mil2ATP ATP program in August 2018.

How long was it from the time of your invite to the actual interview? 8 weeks
Did you have any issues with logbooks, application or paperwork? Not at all. I handed them my green Flight Records Folder, an old civilian logbook from 1994 and my Flying History Summary. I did not do any excel spreadsheets with summaries. I had zero problems. Don’t give them more than they ask for. You open yourself up to errors.
Technical Test Questions Question bank of 5,000 questions, so know the concepts from Readysettakeoff. Odds are you won’t see the identical question on the test. I spent months studying and it paid off. I didn’t find out how I scored, but Capt Holmes said I did extremely well. It’s a tough test, but you can generally narrow it down to two answers and take your best guess.
What was the hardest technical question or content you experienced during the job knowledge test? I had six questions I flagged for review, but finished the test with about 6 minutes to spare. I couldn’t make up my mind to change any answers so I went with the first guess is the best guess theory. One question involved slowing and lowering the landing gear while descending. It involved thrust, drag, lift, concepts. I don’t remember the wording or what I ended up choosing. Know ALSF lighting under CAT 1 ILS and when you descend out of DH or if the runway is not in sight, but the lighting is, can you descend below 100AGL. My test was mostly on aerodynamic concepts.
HR Questions Know your solo date. They asked everyone what was important about that date and what you remembered. I was honest and said it was 25 years ago, so I only remembered a few broad details. I used it as an opportunity to tell them a story I remembered much better–getting my Private Certificate. They spent time talking about my college degrees. I had three UPT check ride busts–I had to talk them through those. If you have negative events in your life/records be prepared to speak on them and be honest about what happened, how you handled the situation, and what you learned from it. They didn’t hold it against me. TMAAT you gave great customer service. TMAAT you resolved a conflict among crew members. WWYD the Captain thinks you are going to make a crossing restriction on approach and you don’t think that is going to happen. They seem to have thick ring binders of company approved questions so you probably aren’t going to get the same questions. They each seem to ask one TMAAT question and one WWYD so you’ll probably get six questions total– three TMAAT and three WWYD. Be calm, take your time, and give them your honest thoughts. Don’t be canned ECIC. Don’t break rules unless it’s for safety of flight or to save a life. Don’t break rules to speed things up or personal convenience.
Cog Test RST preps you well. The reverse percentage questions are tough. Use the answers given to help you do the math. There are no calculators to use. Keep the ball centered on the plank. There are no red stripes that give you points if you get near them. It’s much easier than the COG trainer. The coding stuff is pretty easy. You only have one code to remember and the delayed recall part comes up immediately after you run through the first coding exercise. I was trying to remember it throughout the whole COG exam, but it wasn’t necessary. Spend most of your time studying for the JKT and working on HR prep.
How long prior to the interview did you prepare for the HR portion of the interview? I did one sit down ECIC session and two Webinars. Spend your time doing as many rapid fire Q&As as possible and listening to how other people answer the questions. I couldn’t get into any of these due to scheduling, but I that is what I would add.
Which HR Prep service did you use and did it help? ECIC for the interviewing and RST for the job knowledge test and COG testing.
Any additional information you would like to add. You need to RELAX and be yourself. Have fun and enjoy the opportunity. They want to hire you, so don’t feel like they are looking to eliminate you or you wouldn’t be there. They want to make sure you are a normal person that likes to fly and is confident in yourself. Pay attention to the way the Delta mainline crew conducts themselves while you fly out there. They are sharp and confident. They smile and are always professional. You want to look, sound, and act like them while you interview. Keep that in mind and you will be fine.
Is there anything you wish you could have done different to prepare you for this process? I may have been too relaxed with the psych on Day 2. They represent corporate HR and not the pilot selection team. They don’t look at your HR Board notes from Day 1. Treat it just like the HR Board on Day 1. Be consistent on your answers for sure! They’ll dig into your family life, divorces, children, wife, speeding tickets, etc. way more than the Day 1 HR Board. The psychologist knows nothing about flying. I made an assumption they had read the HR Board notes, but found out later that that wasn’t the case. I would have slowed down and explained my answers better if I had known that. The psych didn’t give me any sort of intro up front. It was completely “new jet, new day” so you have to start from scratch. I wouldn’t have changed any answers. I would have just slowed down and been more in-depth with what I was saying so there was no confusion. Oddly enough they ask you TMAAT questions involving flying despite knowing nothing about flying. That was baffling. They seem to like to pick on military folks since odds are you have had a stressful life by default. They want to make sure the company can defend you legally if you get in some incident where the airline gets sued. Keep your game face on. Be honest on the MMPI test–you can’t fool it. Beware of always/never questions. Example: “I have never told a lie.” Everyone has at some point or another. Be honest about it or it will indicate you are being deceptive. If you have to go to the PARB, just sit tight and join the RST PARB group. Don’t stress. If you are a normal person and didn’t turn the psych session into your own personal counseling/cry session you will be fine.
